What's up with my thyroid labs

Post by DebE13 »

I had my TT on 9/10 and have been struggling to get my zip back in my step. I was taking 125mcg of levothyroxine when my 11/8 labs were taken. I thought I was going crazy and literally felt like I was going to burst out of my skin. When I stressed the personality changes, irritability, mood swings, extreme brain fog, and absolute fatigue, my endo suggested depression meds. Not interested. He upped my dose minimally by increasingly the dose to 175 mcg just on Sunday and 125 mcg for the rest of the week.

I do not feel myself yet but I'm not nearly as emotional so that's a step in the right direction. I requested Cytomel at my last visit since he will not consider the use of NDT. He said he was not opposed to T3 meds but not at this visit. I have to wait until my January appointment to see where my numbers are at and how I feel.

I'm confused that I am feeling better (I hesitate to say better because I don't want to be written off as T4 alone is doing its job) but my labs haven't changed much except for the TSH. I can at least tolerate how I feel until January whereas before I had some very dark thoughts but I must stress I am not ok.

Do these labs prove that I'm not converting T4 to T3 properly or do I need to give it more time? I get checked again on the 13th.

I saw my PCP today and she said my endo would have to order the cortisol saliva test. I was hoping to do that now to rule out any adrenal issues. My doc said I should have recovered from any problems created by prednisone use already. Then she added a who knows in my case since I have other autoimmune issues.

TSH
11/29/2013 1.31 uIU/mL
11/8/2013 3.2 uIU/mL
10/15/2013 17.8 uIU/mL
9/16/2013. 7.1 uIU/mL

Free T4
11/29/2013 1.4 ng/dL
11/8/2013 1.3 ng/dL
10/15/2013 1.1 ng/dL
9/16/2013 0.8 ng/dL

Free T3
11/29/2013 2.4 pg/mL
11/8/2013. 2.4 pg/mL
10/15/2013 1.8 pg/mL
9/16/2013 1.4 pg/mL

Well, your dosage wasn't changed much, so your test results didn't change much (except for TSH, but TSH can vary significantly from test to test for any reason or for no reason). (50 mcg per week is an average increase of only 7 mcg per day, and that's insignificant.)

As far as I can tell, your results appear to be on track, and probably pretty much what your endo wants to see. And the fact that you are feeling somewhat better is an encouraging sign that you may feel even better by the time your January appointment rolls around.

At least it's improving.

Again, patience. I keep overlooking just as I did with MC, that it does take time. Too bad though since immediate results are so much more gratifying. I remember how disappointed I was not to be one of those people who noticed night and day differences when I went GF. Even after months it was a toss up if it was actually helping or not. Two years later and still working on it, I am thankful that you told me it could take years (wasn't happy with that answer at the time).

And I am still working on it. Nearly 3 years later. It is hard when you can't see the the evidence of what is wrong in the results of tests. It tends to make me doubt myself, and wonder if I really feel what I feel. And since the doctors won't believe what patients tell them even when there has been research on the subject, and of course doctors are "god", so my family also made me doubt that I felt what I felt all my life, even now I still do it. Believe the doctors, instead of myself.
