Seeds?

Post by janr »

I have tried to search for discussion on this...how well are seeds such as pumpkin and sunflower generally tolerated? I do tolerate flax but am not sure about other seeds. If they have been problematic for some, has soaking them increased digestibility?

I have no problem with pumpkin or sunflower seeds, eat them without soaking. I waited till I was fairly healed before trying them, though.

I have a zillion food intolerances (as you can see on the left!), but for some reason I tolerate sunflower and pumpkin seeds. I do soak them and dehydrate them, then make them into butter.

Thanks Linda and Jean - it sounds hopeful though I should probably wait a while (I just did the enterolab test, no results yet). Linda, do you add anything to the seeds when making butter?

I add a pinch of salt because I use raw unsalted seeds. Sometimes it needs a little coconut oil to help it to become a creamy consistency. But that's it!

Let us know when you get you Enterolab results!

Sunflower seeds were awful the last time I tested, but I love pumpkin seeds, flax, sesame, chia and hemp. I grind them in a coffee grinder and make them into delicious pumpkin cookies with raisins and coconut oil. No egg, dairy, soy, or grain at all. Although they turn out differently every time.

I invented these cookies from various recipes:

3/4 cup sunflower/pumpkin seed butter (I mix the two)
1/8 cup applesauce
1 tsp. baking soda
1/8 cup maple syrup
splash of vanilla

Mix together and add small handful of Enjoy life mini choc. chips.

Bake at 350 for about 8 minutes. Makes about 8-10 cookies.

They turn green inside due to the seeds/baking soda mix, but they are yummy.
