Metallic Tasting
Two questions:
I've been on a gluten-free and soy-free diet now for about two months, and I wanted to see what would happen if I ate a cookie (not a whole one just two bites). Fifteen minutes later I get this nasty metallic taste in my mouth. Anyone else have this before?
Second question (directed towards Tex), you wanted me to read chapter 14 of your book if I'm not mistaken, but the chapter you sent me was chapter 9. Did you mean chapter 9? I have a little time to read it and wanted to do so but didn't want to read the wrong chapter.
Also, I'm curious, I'm pretty much intolerant to soy, gluten, and dairy, so does it really mean I'm celiac prone or just intolerant to these things due to something else? I'm just trying to understand the anatomy. Thanks.

I don't recall ever mentioning chapter 14 to you. I sent you chapter 9 on October 14. That was 3 - 1/2 months ago. If you haven't read it by now, your time is obviously much too valuable to waste trying to discover ways to improve your health.

Wow. Didn't expect that kind of negative reaction from you, Tex. I don't think I ever did anything to anyone here, and I personally find it rather disturbing that you would have such a condescending and superficial tone with me. As I've stated, up until recently, I have not been able to afford my health insurance. However, I've been pro-active by putting myself on a GF, SF, and a DF diet, in addition to taking your advice about not drinking Ensure's anymore (which has helped). I've also starting drinking coconut milk shakes to help absorb MCT fats so I can maintain as much fat as posible until my tests begin. I don't think I've been careless at all. In fact, I think I've been very diligent about it. I said a while back that I would start reading the material you gave me just as soon as I could. I have two kids, I work, and I go to school. Therefore, I think you're being very unfair in your miscalculated presuppositions of me.
Furthermore, I went back and looked and I misunderstood what chapter you told me to read because you mentioned to me that there were about 14 pages in the chapter you sent, so it was an obvious mistake on my part, but nothing worthy of such backlash in any case.
I'll probably move to another forum. Thanks.

Well I apologize if I seem negative, but it seems to me that it would take superhuman attributes to not have negative thoughts about someone who has continually used the excuse of being too busy to read a few pages of information that would have answered a lot of questions early on. And hopefully it might have provided some helpful insight into your own health issues. Sure, there are many instances when I don't have the time to immediately read an article that someone posts about, but I always find the time later. And if the article is specifically posted just for me, I find time sooner, rather than later. The point is, I didn't go to the trouble of sending you that information because I was trying to waste your time. I was trying to save some time for you, so that you could begin making your treatment decisions much sooner.
Do you really think that you're the only member of this board who is short on time? Get real. There aren't nearly enough hours in the day for most of us, but we make time to do the important things, and one of the important things that we do is to try to help others on this board, so that their recovery might be easier and faster than our own recovery. After all, there are few things in life that can be considered to be more wasteful of both time and energy, than having to deal with serious digestive issues on a daily basis. We try to offer help in the best ways that experience have shown to be helpful, but no, we're not perfect — we're only human, after all. There are no guarantees in life, so we can only hope that we aren't wasting our time by doing this, because we are all short on time, also.
I really don't believe that asking you to read that chapter was asking too much. And you will notice that after I sent you a copy of the chapter in October, it didn't phase me a bit when the topic came up a month later, in November, and I again asked you to read the chapter. Nor did it bother me when the same topic came up again, another month later, in December, and again I gently suggested that it would be helpful for you to read the chapter. It took a lot of time to write that chapter, but it really doesn't take very much time to read it. So here we are an additional 6 weeks later, and you're still telling me that you haven't read the article because you still haven't had time. Really?
Time management is obviously not your forte. Maybe what you're really looking for is a discussion board that specializes in discussions concerning time management, such as this one for example:
Time Management Support Group

Tex, unfortunately you're missing some really important details about me. I'm in my early thirties with two kids, one which is 1.5 and another which is 9. I have to work to make ends meet in addition to being under the pressure of college homework on a daily basis with additional math home work that takes even longer. Moreover, I do not have a printer, so any articles that get sent to me I have to place in a folder and read when I can remember and when I have more time to sit in front of a computer. So the option to go sit on the toilet and read doesn't apply. Another very important thing you don't consider is that this is not the only forum I'm a part of. I'm also a part of a crohn's forum site, a celiac forum, a celiac facebook group, so I normally prefer to get in and out with questions and answers to make the best use of time. If I can get an answer to some question in a few minutes rather than waiting to read a chapter of a book, I will definitely go that route. If I had more time, I'd probably have already read the book you kindly sent to me.
Finally, I don't think I'm busier than anyone here, nor do I feel like I've made it seem that way. However, I know what I have on my plate and most people don't have that much going on at my age, and I'm not talking specifically about my health. I honestly think you completely over-reacted and took me not immediately reading the book you sent me as an insult to your intelligence. If that's what you think, then you are much further from the truth than you realize. God bless.

Hi Solisspirit, While in college I learned a good lesson. I asked my college professer a question about a procedure while making a setup on a machine tool. He asked me " did I read that chapter ". I said no and felt the same as you. He told me " after I read the chapter, explain the procedure and I will correct you if you get it wrong " That thought me a very important lesson that I took with me into my teaching. I explained to my students that they could not ask me questions, but had to explain the procedure and I will correct them the same way the college professor corrected me. I explained to the students " what are they going to do after they graduate if they have a question " I said that why there are books. I explained that this process makes you " think " instead of getting an instant answer. The students liked this method, it gave them a sense of accomplishment when they completed the task. That was before cell phones and the internet. Jon
That's excellent advice, Jon. I'd also add, Solisspirit, that it's quite unfair to expect Tex (or anyone on the board, really), to answer basic, fundamental questions that have been answered here many times over and are easily found with a search. Tex sent you, without charge, an important chapter of his book out of a genuine willingness to help. A book, I might add, that most everyone else here paid upwards of $25 for and willingly so. Furthermore, your continued insistence that you have no time and just want quick answers is disrespectful at best. What you're essentially saying is that your time is more important than anyone else's here, meaning we should use our time to answer your questions--the answers to which could easily be found on this board or in the chapter Tex sent you--because that's what's fastest and most convenient for you. That's not how it works in a community, which is what we are here. If you spend any time at all on this forum reading other people's stories, you'd know there are folks here who carry greater burdens of health, of time, of LIFE, than you can possibly imagine. So while I don't doubt that you are stressed, busy, pressured and the rest of it...so is just about everyone else here, which is actually a major contributor to Microscopic Colitis.
Read the chapter. Ask thoughtful questions if things don't make sense. But don't come here with misguided expectations that this group exists to serve your needs alone.

Fiona,
I think our posts crossed. If you check out mine above, you will see that I have offered to answer solispirit's questions. I have been on this forum since its inception and have answered basic, fundamental questions again and again without feeling anger or frustration or sarcasm toward the asker.
I am really disappointed (and stunned actually) to see a member being attacked personally. We have NEVER operated like this.......we have always believed that everyone who comes to this forum deserves to be treated with the utmost patience, compassion and respect. A major reason why we created this forum, in fact, was because some on the original MC forum (created by Sally) increasingly began responding in a mean-spirited way to members.
I am hoping that this thread is just an anomaly. Maybe it should be deleted? As a moderator I have the ability to delete offensive or inappropriate posts; however, I have not done so because it seems I am in the minority here. No one else seems to feel as I do.

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Polly,
Yes, our posts did cross. You are more than welcome to delete my post if you feel it's an attack against a member, which wasn't my intention. I just felt something needed to be said, not so much in defense of Tex personally, but in defense of the board overall, which has come to mean a great deal to me as I believe it probably saved my life.
I think your offer to Solisspirit is exceedingly generous, and I admire you for it. I don't have patience for people who are unwilling to do even the barest minimum to help themselves but expect others to do it for them, so I don't find the thread mean-spirited as much as perhaps lacking in patience. In any case, in the spirit of keeping it positive at all times, I'd agree that deleting the entire thread is probably the best option.

Polly,
I believe that you are overlooking some important issues here. I suggest you go back and read all of his posts. I'm guessing that you never read most of them (I don't recall you responding to them). I didn't write that post on a whim, or because I was having a bad day. I take this board, and what it stands for very seriously. I wouldn't be here every day if I didn't. If you want more details, please PM me or email me. I can post it all if you prefer, but I'd rather not, because that would surely be viewed as inflammatory.

I'm honestly sorry to anyone I have offended here, because I clearly cannot see where I went wrong. I have been open, honest, and sincere. I have expressed my issues with humility and haven't expected anything in return, but to any response I did get I greatly appreciated.
Tex, I just don't think you get it. By saying what you have said in the reply before me, it's clear you have some grudge against me and I have no idea why, aside from the fact that you might be upset that you feel like I insulted your intelligence in some way (which I have not done intentionally). You treat me as if I did something to you personally. Please point out what question, or on what thread you're referring to Polly, I asked that offended you to the point that you snapped at me like you did to this thread? I really want to know. Using condescension and sarcasm is very disrespectful to anyone suffering from any health issue, especially when they're merely trying to kindly borrow your experience that's not entirely found in books. And the sad part about it all is, I wasn't asking you another question at all regarding the issue but trying to make sure you sent me the right chapter so I COULD read what you sent me.
Polly, I must say I do thank you for not being part of the 'gang' in this thread. I haven't done anything to anyone but ask a few questions, and I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
