So, I now have a bacterial infection. I don't know for certain it was caused by the candidas treatment, but the pharmacist who filled the script told me there was a delicate balance in our bodies between the two, and if I didn't have a candidas treatment but treated for it anyway, my bacterial levels could rise.
So, I'm starting antibiotics today. I know from reading others' posts, this is bad news for colitis, and right before we take a week long college touring trip with our daughter. Luckily I respond well to large amounts of immodium.
I know many here don't do well with probiotics, but I'm going to be taking them anway. My GI recommended one called "align".
Ugh, ugh, ugh. Yes, I know I am being quite melodramatic, but that's my nature. ;)
If anything, at least these two bouts will silence well-intentioned diagnosis of family members who are certain I have a bacterial or candidas infection. ... I hope. *sigh*
From candidas to bacterial Ugh!

Jennifer,
Yes, you definitely want to take a good probiotic for at least a couple of weeks after the antibiotic treatment is completed (regardless of how well you happen to tolerate probiotics otherwise). The probiotic will help to minimize the chances of winding up with a worse bacterial infection than you started with, such as antibiotic-resistant C. diff.
Good luck with your treatment, and keep us posted.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
