Ever since I overlooked the soy additive in my Omega 3 liquid vitamins I'm extra cautious about the inactive ingredients in meds. Since I just started Nortriptyline I've had some gurgling times- yesterday was one. So here is a list of the inactive ingredients-- does anyone see any wheat, gluten, dairy or soy derivatives in this list? I checked it against the soy list I now carry on my iPhone but want to be doubly sure.
Nortriptyline Hydrochloride Capsules USP (equivalent to 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg and 75 mg Nortriptyline), for oral administration, contain the following inactive ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, pregelatinized starch and sodium lauryl sulfate.
The 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg and 75 mg capsule shells contain: gelatin, methylparaben, propylparaben, sodium lauryl sulfate and titanium dioxide. They may also contain: benzyl alcohol, butylparaben, edetate calcium disodium, silicon dioxide or sodium propionate.
The 10 mg, 25 mg and 75 mg capsule shells also contain D&C Yellow No. 10 and FD&C Blue No. 1.
Thanks so much,
Carol

Hi Carol,
That's tough to pin down, but I note that it includes sodium lauryl sulfate, which is a detergent and surfactant used in many personal care products (mostly cleansers, shampoos, etc.). I never thought of it as being suitable for internal use, but I suppose it is used in that product in order to increase absorbability. Dr. Mercola is not a fan (for external use, so I doubt that he would recommend it for internal use, either).

Obviously something else could be the problem, though.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

carol,
I think it is the gelatin.
Majority of gelatin is from pig based source.
If it is vegan friendly gelatin, then it has a high chance of being soy based.
I note that you react to both. (Bugger)
It would only be a small amount, so if you are reacting then it would be tricky to determine if it is the gelatin and inactive ingredients you are reacting to, or the med itself ??

Tex and Pat,
I'm a little speechless--- detergent in my meds, both inside and out--- --- maybe that gurgling was just scrubbing bubbles moving through. I should be sparkling inside.
I vaguely remember capsules being pork based. Thanks for the reminder Gabes, I needed the confirmation.
Well....... maybe my better strategy would be to reduce my dosage of Amitriptyline to 5mg rather than switch meds entirely. I think the additives in the med and capsules probably are going to keep Nortriptyline from being something I can take. I have enjoyed feeling less sedated this week.
This is why I ask you guys-- I always get such good advice. And I see I am going to have to look up every ingredient by name because looking at lists alone is not enough information.
thanks again,
Carol
