a cold or Sudafed making my tummy hurt?
I have my first cold in over a year and decided to take some Sudafed to keep my sinuses clear ( so I don't get the dreaded sinus infection). I started having more BMs ( not D) and pain in my upper Gi after I eat anything. Does being sick make everything a little touchy, or is it the meds?

Sorry you're sick Leah. I take sudafed (generic) and have never had a problem. I haven't taken it since stopping budesinide, however.
Hope you feel better soon.

Leah, I find that if I have a lot of drainage it will upset my stomach and even make me a little gassy. I haven't had that with Sudafed that I recall, but since I have allergies I can vouch that drainage can certainly create GI problems for me.

Oh dear sucks that you are not well!
Yes, excessive post nasal drip can cause upset stomach especially if infection is present. I like to use a Netti pot to keep sinuses clear during allergy season.
Funny that my nose is much clearer since being on the elimination diet! I raked the lawn on Monday with no allergic reaction. Wonders never cease!!!

Hi Leah,
Are you better? Hope so.
I checked out the ingredients in Sudafed. Not sure what prep you are using, but the polyethylene glycol could be a problem. It is used as a laxative (ex. Miralax) and is often one of the ingredients in the preps used for bowel clean out, like Go-Lytely. Also, I saw where povidone (another ingredient) is contraindicated in folks with dermatitis herpetiformis (D.H.), the rash associated with gluten sensitivity.
I was struck by the fact that most of the inert ingredients have "industrial" uses - no wonder we MCers with our sensitive tummies have problems with many OTC preps.
I was told to use Miralax (basically pure polyethylene glycol) for my last colonoscopy clean out. I think it caused extreme irritation of my colon mucosa - when my GI doc gave me the photos of the procedure, the mucosa was angry red and swollen. It had to have been the Miralax, because I had been fine beforehand.......and my biopsy showed no evidence of MC. It started a flare that took a while to recover from.

P.S. I prefer Mucinex or the Neil-Med irrigation kit for keeping the sinuses clear. They both really work for me.
