Pain/Bloating
Hi everyone,
It's been awhile since I've written, but I do come on here regularly to read/research. I continue to strictly follow my diet which for me is eliminating gluten, dairy, soy (by choice not test results), and have been doing very well. I have an increased amount of energy and am able to do many things I was unable to do when my MC was at its worst.
There's one symptom I never experienced, and that is pain. For lunch today, I had salmon, rice with soy free earth balance, and broccoli and water to drink. About 1-1/2 hours after lunch I began noticing a lot of bloating and have been in pain ever since. I have never asked before as it wasn't a problem for me, but ..... what is the pain caused from?
Thank you for your time in reading or responding to this post.

Hi Paula,
Do you normally eat broccoli, or was this the first time in a long time? Broccoli is known to cause gas for most people, and of course if we are unable to move the gas out of the digestive system, it causes bloating, which often causes pain.
Anyway, that's my best guess about what might have happened.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Wow, Tex, amazed at your response. I thought broccoli was okay, but I also have not eaten in in quite a long time. But the night before and also for lunch that day I had broccoli, and quite a bit of it. I'm not up to putting myself through a test right now to find out, but when I do try it I will eat a small portion. My sympathies go out to those who do experience pain with MC.
I'm guilty for thinking if it's GF and DF it's okay to eat. Another lesson learned.
Thank you, Brandy, for your comment about Earth Balance. You're right about numerous ingredients. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to cut back on it and use more olive oil and coconut oil.

Paula,
The thing is, most of us seem to tolerate broccoli OK (as long as we can handle the gas). It's only a problem if we have trouble getting rid of the gas.
Broccoli was one of only a few well-cooked vegetables that I ate when I was recovering. The others were potatoes, squash, and green beans. Potatoes I ate almost every day (in one form or another), but the others I only ate occasionally, and if I were in a phase where I was having serious gas/bloating problems, I would avoid broccoli.
I agree with Brandi that the Earth Balance could be a problem in that situation, also.
