invalid session

Post by Alicegf »

Tex,

I'm trying the second time to send a pm. Now I get a message that says invalid session, Please try again. When I do that, the same thing happens over and over. Am I doing something wrong?

Alice,

The most likely cause is a corrupt cookie in your browser. To correct the problem you can click on the link below, and follow the onscreen directions. When it says to close your browser, be sure to close all open tabs if you have more than one open, otherwise it won't properly clear your cookie cache. After that, when you access the discussion board again, and log in, the system will set a new cookie in your browser, which should resolve the problem.

http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/remove_cookies.php

If that doesn't solve the problem please let me know, but 99.9 % of the time this will correct any navigation/permission issues with the discussion board. The link can be found at the bottom of every page on the site, just below the window provided for writing responses to posts, in case you should ever need it again in the future.

Sorry for the problem.

Tex,

I did what you said and no luck. I've lost 2 p.m.s when I tried to "save as draft" or "send". Another pm went through. I've checked all the boxes for the missing ones.
What a puzzle!

Alice,

I'm sorry that you're having so much trouble with this feature. I kind of doubt that anyone else has ever tried to use the "save as draft" option for PMs before, because no one has previously complained that it didn't work for PMs in all these years. I know I've never tried it before. But I tried it just now, and it saved the draft just fine, but when I then tried to send it, it gave me an invalid session message, suggesting a permissions problem with the cookie in my browser.

Incidentally, the draft was correctly listed under "Private Messages", at the bottom of the list.

Apparently there's a bug in the code associated with using the "save as draft" option for PMs. It was intended for use with regular posts. The code involved is very complex because of the way that it has to coordinate entries in the SQL database. To be honest, it's been so many years since I installed that code that I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where to even start looking for the problem. It would be like searching for a needle in a haystack. Early on, I probably could have eventually tracked it down, but figuring out the problem after so many years have gone by would probably turn out to be a Herculean task. I'm no longer very proficient in the use of php code.

I'm hoping that you can get by without saving PMs as drafts If you don't have time to finish a message, it can be cut and pasted into a word processor, or notepad, or wordpad, etc., and saved as a text file on your computer. Then when you have time to finish it, it can be cut and pasted into a post or PM on the board.

If you simply can't live without it, I can try to locate the problem by devoting a weekend or so to it, but locating bugs in php code is tedious, frustrating work, to say the least.

Tex,

Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me. I don't need the "save as draft" feature. I just thought it was strange that when I hit that option, it not only didn't save, but made the message disappear entirely.

It apparently has some major problems, because it reacts differently on different computers. On mine (using a Firefox browser), it saves the draft (of a PM) just fine, and it will let me edit it or preview it, but it won't allow me to post it. And while I didn't actually try to delete it (by selecting "yes" to confirm), when I clicked on "delete" and then selected "no", it took me to my inbox, leading me to believe that if I actually confirmed a delete, it would probably delete all of the messages in my inbox (which would be bad news, of course).

I'm tempted to remove the entire option (since it obviously doesn't work right for PMs, but it's still somewhat handy for regular posts, and that's what most members use it for.

Anyway, I'm sorry for all the aggravation.
