Can I have a colonoscopy 3 days after hemorrhoid banding?

Post by wnorm »

I am 61 and have collagenous colitis and mastocytic enterocolitis. I have had severe diarrhea about 4-11 times/day on average for at least 15 years. In the last few months this morphed dramatically to severe constipation.
I went to my colo-rectal doctor today at a hospital (Sept 9)and had hemorrhoid banding. Afterwards I discussed this recent change in my digestion. I also had stage 1b uterine cancer surgery(total hysterectomy) last year and have been experiencing pelvic pain, bloating etc. He told me to book a colonoscopy asap at his private clinic. I called and got an appointment for 3 days from now (Sept.12).In retrospect, shouldn't I wait longer than 3 days in order to avoid severe pain and bleeding at the just-banded hemorrhoid site from the colonoscopy prep and procedure? The doctor never mentioned anything.Any thoughts?

Hi,

I don't know the answer to your question, but I have a hunch that you are correct that you would be better off to wait until the banding/atrophy/healing cycle is complete. I believe that if I were in that situation, I would at least call my PCP and ask for an opinion on whether or not to wait, and if so, for how long.

Thank-you so much for your response. You are so incredibly helpful. I knew that if I posted here you would answer pretty quickly. I sent an email to the clinic and hope to get a response tomorrow. There is a lot of misinformation about colonoscopy preps even within the same clinic.
BTW, my G.P. (or PCP in the US) is pretty useless. He is usually off the mark for most things. I developed cellulitis on my ear a few weeks ago. He said it was an allergy and that I should put cortisone cream on it. Luckily I was seen by the Infectious Diseases Dept. at the hospital and got treated with antibiotics. However, as luck would have it, the levaquin I was prescribed messed up my gut and possibly caused tendon damage in my knee and shoulder (who knew about the black box warning about spontaneous tendon rupture?)

Best wishes.

Having had banding done, colonoscopy prep and procedure is not something I would do. I would wait at least 3-4 weeks.

The other aspect to this, it is best to eat low residue eating plan for a week before clean out. To try and rush the clean out, there is risk of the clean out not being good enough, and that in 3-4 weeks having to repeat it all again.

Hope this helps

Any time that you need to consider taking a prescription medication, it may help to check our listing of medications to see if it/they are listed. Some medications are contraindicated for MC, and some are much safer than others. Our list contains a couple of warnings about levaquin and other fluoroquinolones. Besides the risk of tendinitis or tendon rupture, they can also cause peripheral neuropathy, similar to the peripheral neuropathy that can be caused by diabetes. You can see the list at this link:

Medications And Supplements That Are Safe For Most Of Us
