Hello,
I realize this is a long-shot, but does anyone know if it's safe to breastfeed while taking Entocort?
I have two gastroenterologists, one who is very conservative and advises me against taking it and one who is quite laid-back and suggests I take it. I've done some research online, but nothing is very clear. My OB also doesn't know.
Unfortunately, my success of last week seems to have faded and I'm back to frequent D. I was looking forward to having my baby and getting on Entocort but now I'm worried about breastfeeding.
If nothing else, I'll breastfeed for just a short while and then get on Entocort. Of course, I hope and pray that the MC miraculously retreats after I have the baby (I was in near-remission when I got pregnant).
Thanks for all the advice and input you provide,
Magyar

Are you able to contact a board certified lactation consultant? That would be the most knowlegeable source of information. Call the hospital where you plan to deliver, and if there isn't one on staff - they should be able to give you a referral. There is a huge pharmacological text referred to as "Hale's" (that may be the author's name??) in the breastfeeding community which has info on every drug if it has been studied in breastfeeding women. They should be able to look it up and give you the latest info.
I have the "Nursing Mother's Companion" but it is from 1995 (old - before Entocort was approved here) and says about steroids in general " Low doses and short courses of therapy appear to pose no harm to the infant. Of concern are long courses of treatment with moderate to large doses. Although only a small fraction of each dose appears in breast milk, no one knows what these amounts might do to the developing infant." Keep in mind this is 10 year old info and refers mainly to prednisone - I'd strongly suggest you find some current info on Entocort, specifically. The LC I used closed up shop, otherwise I'd call for you. Let us know what you find out!

PS - I think if you go to ivillage.com (a parenting site) they have an "ask the lactation consultant" forum - this might be a question of general interest they could answer there for you!
