I am pumped!

Post by TXBrenda »

Never thought I would see this in Amarillo, TX. A gluten free bakery has opened in the last week. Amarillo has a population of about 200k so it is not a very large town and the surrounding area is not very populous. We are in between Albuquerque and Oklahoma City. Lubbock, TX is about 120 miles to the south. I plan to check out this business on the weekend.

I am doing a happy dance!

Fantastic news! Wish one would open up in my area.

When you say the population is only 200k, are you referring to 250,000? Not possible... that would be a big town to me.

Next thought that just came to mind for me anyway is that I am also DF, so it wouldn't work for me. I know that because my hubby stopped by my office one day with what was a GF treat from a local bakery that "claims" to have GF bakery goods every Wednesday. First, I don't believe they could do that since they are a regular bakery full time. In spite of that, I ate the treat anyway. I also paid for it.

Great news for you, though. Enjoy and have something good for me too!

In the past 5 years I have progressed from a city of 1.8 Million, to a city of 130,000 and now 68,000!

despite the size of the locations, in this period i think it is more so the demand of gluten free (and multiple intolerance products) have encouraged the increase of good quality gluten free cafe's and bakerys, and shops stocking good quality gluten free products/meals has increased.

Manufacturers that were doing gluten free 5 years ago, are now doing products that are gluten free, dairy free, soy free, etc.

we are not 'rare aliens' anymore!

That's wonderful news, Brenda!! My MIL moved to Alpine (pop 5000?) and there are some folks selling gluten/dairy/soy free at the farmers markets there. I was pretty impressed and grateful and made friends with one of the vendors so I visit him when I'm there now.

It's truly remarkable how well GF has caught on.

At the last census, our population was around 195,000 so I round that up to 200k or 200,000. I'm a retired engineer, lol. This business' FB page says they have DF selections and some have requested egg free. Right now the Soy free is by special order. My only intolerance is gluten but my daughter is soy and gluten intolerant. This business is literally around the corner from her apartment.

The owner had been selling her wares at a couple of the farmer's markets but purchased this bakery (not gluten free) when it sold a few months ago. We have a couple of bakeries that have GF selections that are prepared once a week before the regular products are prepared. This new bakery is dedicated to producing gluten free products. That is why I am so excited.

I live in a village that has a population of maybe 300 people. The nearest city is 12 miles away (not far), and the population is about 10,000. In spite of the growing number of people with Celiac and gluten sensitivity, this area is not GF friendly at all. Of course I can find processed GF/DF/SF products, but I choose not to eat processed foods. I don't think many people here "get it" when it comes to GF problems. Of course, that's only my opinion. In time, I am sure GF foods will be offered in restaurants, and maybe even in a bakery.

So, Gabes, in this area we are still 'rare aliens.'

Paula, I'm DF, too and friends have brought me gluten free baked goods and I have to turn them down. As good as they look I know what's hiding in them and they're not worth it!

Yeah, I have a friend who has celiac disease, and she makes gf goodies, and she tries to remember my dairy and soy problems, but most of the time when she tells me what she put in it, she'll remember that she used butter or milk.

It's nice of people to try, but hard when they get it wrong and their effort goes to waste.

I have tried to stay away from the processed GF products since we discussed here and learned that GF just means there may be an amount too small to legally have to put on the package. Also, most or them are not DF, EF & SF.
Reminds me of the fat free spray butter...it is NOT FF each spray is just less than .5 G so they can put 0 G. It has the same amount as butter you just have to spray a lot to get a tablespoon.

Found out today that we are getting a Palio's Pizza that sells a GF crust pizza. A couple of places sell a GF crust, but one more won't hurt.

I won't get to try too many things from the GF bakery because I'm also diabetic, lol. It will be nice to have a place to have a treat once in a while.
