Enterolab or Genova Diagnostics???
Does anyone know the difference between the two?
My Dr. sent my bum labs to Genova Diagnostics, and apparently my Dr. office can take a blood sample for igG and igE readings and have them read at our local hospitals lab.
Just curious if I will rec'e correct readings or not. I want so much to know what my body has been trying to tell me these last 7 years and being Dx with MC as of April 2012. Has anybody else been able to get answers in this fashion without them being done at Enterolab or Genova?
Thanks
Erica

Hi Erica,
As I recall, Genova Diagnostics is good at analyzing stool samples for parasites and bacteria infections (but not food sensitivities). And the blood tests for IgG and IgE antibodies will tell you if you have any classic allergies (but not digestive system food sensitivities). IOW these tests have limited value for the most common digestive system issues that perpetuate MC symptoms.
For detecting the type of food sensitivities that perpetuate the inflammation that causes MC, no other lab even comes close to the accuracy and reliability of EnteroLab.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Erica,
It's like comparing apples to oranges. The Genova GI Effects Stool Profile test gives you digestion & absorption info, as well as, inflammation & immunology & gastrointestinal microbiome results.
You can find the interpretation of the results on the Genova website.
Enterolab gives you results of food sensitivities... so, you know what to start eliminating from your diet to be able to allow your gut to heal. It's the best place to get started. The Genova results are helpful, too, but down the road a bit.

Thank you Tex, and Linda,
Now that I have my ideas straight about the two, I asked more questions today when I had a blood draw and come to find out I am only going to be checked for VitD, Cholesterol, Gluten intolerance, and something called MTHFR. The REAL food test is an E95 and a A95 food panel bum test that is sent to Meridian Valley Labs in Renton, WA (just across the state where I live). I read all about their process and as far as I can tell it resembles Enterolab very closely.
So when all my Genova testing comes back around the first of April, I will follow up with my Dr. and request the food test kit, if for some reason I'm not 100% happy (I should give it a chance though) I will go Enterolab all the way, but from what I have read the results are very comparable right down to their philosophy about how food does affect our gut and getting to the bottom of food intolerances is the only way to be certain how to approach healing.
I feel good at least starting something, I've stayed idle for far too long already. I can't believe my GI when I was dx with LC that she didn't encourage more testing...I'm shaking my head right now that she marked it as an IBS case saying I wasn't gluten intolerant an sent me out into the world to fend for myself knowing I had inflammation of the intestines.

it is not entirely your doctors fault - the approach to IBD's is governed by the Medical System, which is a puppet of Big Pharma.
they kinda have to follow the system that pays their wages... also the published information (which specialists rely on) about LC /CC is inaccurate and misleading.
Wholistic specialists and doctors will embrace diet, comprehensive testing, and listen to your body approach to wellness.
we cant alienate our doctors/specialists totally - we need them as time goes on. Albeit, the approach we encourage for a good MC management plan is 'informed self management'
with the help of the fantastic people here, you can get on the right track!

Erica,
Since the only true gluten intolerance tests are those offered by EnteroLab, I'm guessing that what your doctor actually ordered was the classic celiac blood tests. If you are a celiac, then the result might be positive, but otherwise, like all the rest of us here who do not have fully-developed celiac disease, your results will be negative, and your doctor will insist that you are not sensitive to gluten.
The problem is that the medical community does not actually have any approved gluten intolerance tests (because those in the position of making such policy decisions within the medical profession refuse to acknowledge the EnteroLab tests because so many of them intensely dislike labs that offer tests direct to patients). Fortunately some doctors are willing to do what's best for their patients in this situation and they are willing to order the EnteroLab tests. The blood tests will only diagnose fully-developed celiac disease. Celiac disease usually takes years to develop, and the blood tests will not detect any stage of celiac disease less than mature, and it definitely will not detect the type of gluten sensitivity that is associated with MC.
The bottom line is: A positive result on those blood tests can verify celiac disease, but contrary to what most doctors claim, a negative result definitely does not rule out gluten sensitivity.
Good luck with the testing.

Good for you. The first step is always the most difficult. Once we're on our way toward recovery, it gets easier as we go, especially when we begin to see substantial improvement.Erica wrote:I feel good at least starting something, I've stayed idle for far too long already.

Thank you Gabes, and Tex,
Well Tex looks like that gluten thing I won't put much faith in, but I hope to see some progress and that will help keep me motivated to venture more until I get results that are working for me. Thanks for the "can do" about everything, it is this kind of help I need.
Gabes the Dr. that I just happened upon (because I was dizzy and thought perhaps I had an ear infection-which turned out to be a blocked Eustachian tube probably due to the allergy symptoms I keep having) appears to be into natural healing and likes to take the holistic approach to things. He also believes in these 'ruling' out tests which is way more than I have gotten from any other Dr so far, so I am hopeful now. Just done with the medication I don't need anymore, I'll stick to my Allegra for now, but hope to wean off that as time goes on.
I will keep poking around and reading on this site as much as I can, so far it has broken open a new world for me
Would just like to hug everyone.
