MC & Diverticulitis

Post by Joefnh »

Does anyone know if any potential relationship exist between MC and diverticulitis ?? Recently my diverticulitis has flared up and caused complications including the formation of a large internal abscess and fistula to the bladder from the colon. This set of events has led to the need to have surgery this Monday to have my sigmoid colon removed and either a colostomy or ileostomy performed depending on the findings.

The reason I ask is that I have no risk factors for diverticulitis which often includes more of a pattern of constipation which I alsmost never experience.

Sorry you are facing surgery. In the past, after or during a flare my diverticulitis would rear its ugly head. Since I have been taking 2 tablespoons of black seed oil per day I have felt much better but I haven't had a flare either. The black seed oil helps to reduce inflammation. I describe how I feel now as "It is easier to move." I noticed the improvement when I started with 2 tsp per day. I increased to 2 tablespoons per day (2 doses) because I have been battling a staph infection on my shin from an injury that occurred mid May.

Hope your surgery goes well and you heal fast.

I don't know if there is a relationship between MC and diverticulitis. My GI told me after my second colonoscopy that I had diverticulosis (that's when I was diagnosed with LC). I don't remember them telling me after the first colonoscopy about ten years earlier that I had diverticulosis. I don't know if there is a connection between MC and diverticula, or if it is just because I am ten years older and therefore more likely to have diverticula.

Regardless, I am very sorry to hear about your problems and wish you a successful surgery on Monday and a rapid recovery!!!

Joe,

I'm sorry that you will have to deal with more surgery, but I can understand why you are asking that question. IMO it is definitely connected, certainly not for everyone, but for those of us who have the right genetics, right environment, or whatever is the key, it appears (to me at least) to be connected.

I recall reading a research article years ago that mentioned that when biopsy samples taken from the mucosa of diverticula are examined under a microscope, they show lymphocytic infiltration. Presumably that refers to the same type of T-cells responsible for the inflammation associated with LC. After several years of dealing with MC symptoms, followed by a couple of years spent recovering, as you probably recall, I had to have emergency surgery to remove a stenosis in my sigmoid colon. The GI specialist and the surgeon suspected cancer, but the diagnosis by the pathologist was diverticulitis. IMO, this tends to blur the line between diverticulitis and MC.

The GI's report on my initial colonoscopy (done 5 years prior to the surgery, to investigate the cause of my uncontrollable diarrhea — apparently to rule out cancer), noted numerous diverticuli, but not diverticulitis. Did any of your prior colonoscopies mention any evidence of the presence of diverticuli? Pathologists and GI docs usually refer to them as "tics" on internal (peer to peer) medical reports.

Best of luck during the surgery and recovery.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi, Joe. The colonoscopy that diagnosed the LC found no signs of diverticuli. That was 2 years ago at age 53 so I am curious to see what my next colonoscopy shows. They want to see me five years after my diagnosis rather than the normal 10 years. Good luck with your surgery.

I'm so sorry you are facing another challenge, Joe. My mother had MC (and refused to try a GF diet). She was diagnosed in about 2002 and was in her 80s. She was hospitalized with diverticulitis a couple of times. Because of her age, surgery wasn't recommended.

You'll be in my prayers, Joe. Good luck with the surgery.

Hope your surgery went according to Hoyle

My mom had a Sigmoid operation last year for a diver(Tic) that began leaking into her abdomen (was super painful and she immediately went to urgent care) she was 67 I am 47, I am getting an intuition that the two are connected because she had undiagnosed diarrhea for the last 20 years and now it has hit me. I think she had MC or perhaps LC like myself all those years and it got to a point it became a Tic. I am wondering if I had not gotten Dx with LC an had just let it get to the point of a very bad leaky colon I might be where she is when I am 67.

I am hoping with diet changes this turns that future incident around for me. My mom is stubborn and because of the operation and removing the really offending inflammation she thinks she is doing fine and doesn't feel the need to worry about a diet change. I feel bad for her because I feel it is only a matter of time that the inflammation will build up again and make her miserable once again and who knows what will happen to her then. I have shared every step of my journey with her only to feel like I'm the one with the intolerance and that's it. If she is doing something she is not sharing her journey with me, we are pretty close but I don't get volunteered much information unless I ask.

Here's to your recovery, may it be stress free and you speed heal.
Warmly,
Erica
