It's been awhile since I've posted. Probably because I've been feeling so great which allows me to get out and enjoy life again.
Since getting my test results back in March, I've eliminated soy and gluten. Soy being extremely difficult, but worth it. It took me a week or two to start feeling like myself and then having regular BM's for the first time since I was in high school. But this last week or so all my symptoms started creeping back. There's been no change in my diet except on fathers day I had a really fatty steam which caused extreme pain between my ribs in my upper stomach. And my daughter made me gluten free, soy free muffins but accidentally used vegetable oil instead of canola oil. I had only one bite until I realized what happened. So since fathers day I've stuck pretty close to the BRAT diet. But I'm still running to the bathroom throughout the day. My joints are starting to hurt and the fatigue is coming back among other things.
I don't understand what's going on. I've worked so hard to do exactly what needs to be done and now I'm just lost. I don't know what to do to get back on track.

Mandy,
Sorry that you're suffering a relapse of symptoms. When that happens 1 or 2 months after reaching remission, it's usually because our immune system has discovered another food sensitivity that it previously ignored because it was concentrating on the worst offender (usually gluten). As anti-gliadin antibody levels decline, the immune system starts to recognize other food sensitivities that might be present. Also, please check the labels on all your medications, supplements, etc., and double check your diet to make sure that it is not being somehow cross-contaminated.
If you are not avoiding all dairy products and/or eggs, you might try cutting them out for a few days to see if it makes a difference. Of course if you are already eating a BRAT diet, then you are already doing that. The pains and fatigue suggest that gluten might be somehow sneaking into your diet. But stress can also trump all our best efforts, unfortunately, so symptoms can be self-perpetuating because of the stress that they cause.
And sometimes we just need a bit more time to recover. I hope that you will be feeling much better soon.
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hi Mandy,
Yes, do what Tex said.
After 2 years of solid remission I'm in a mini flare. I took it back to basics. First 3 days I had protein and GF broth only with a tiny drizzle of olive oil for my brain. Day 4 I added 2 bananas. The last 10 days I've been eating mostly protein with bananas, avacado and a little rice. At day 10 the gurgling went away.
Do whatever you can to minimize stress.
