Setback--any thoughts?

Post by adoptbc4 »

Hi all,
I have been following a GF, DF. WF, SF diet and taking Colestid once a day.
I haven't had any diarrhea in over 2 weeks and have been able to stop taking anti diarrhea med as well.
Last Friday, I ate out late--big no no for me with all of my other gastric issues (lymphoma, h pylori). It was a family event and I was unable to get the dinner scheduled earlier. I ate steak, broccoli, fries, and a few bites of a sweet potato casserole. I'm sure there was gluten in the sp casserole, and have noticed that broccoli has bothered me before.
I didn't have any diarrhea. Instead, I threw up numerous times the following evening and felt for 3 days like I had food poisoning--very nauseated.

Worked 4 long days feeling pretty drained and was really careful about what I ate. A week later and I still don't feel well--the vomiting worries me because it may mean my lymphoma has come back. I have an EGD in Oct to see if I'm still in remission.
Any thoughts or feedback?

That's a very unusual reaction. First, it's unusual to have nausea without eventual D, and it's unusual that the nausea would last so long.

My suspicions point to the Colestid. It's known side effects include constipation and associated symptoms, including nausea and vomiting. It's possible that the initial reaction was triggered by a food reaction, and after that the symptoms were maintained/perpetuated by the Colestid.

I would try skipping the Colestid for a day or 3 to see if that might resolve the problem. If that resolves the nausea, but leads to D, you might be able to use a lower dose of Colestid, or switch brands.

There's another possibility that this event has caused a mast cell activation problem. I'm not sure if you can use antihistamines in your treatment program, but if you are allowed to do so, 1 or 2 antihistamines each day might prevent the nausea.

Not very helpful, but could it be the H Pylori?

I used to have H Pylori and had a few bouts of nausea/vomiting that lasted for days. Afterwards I would be weak and out of breath for about a week. Eventually I would feel normal again. Sometimes it was tied to food, sometimes stress, sometimes a virus. It seems like having H Pylori can make anything GI related much worse than it would be otherwise.

I really hope you feel better soon and that your EGD goes well!

the meal alone was very likely to have gluten, soy and as it contained broccoli, maybe the combo of the three and eating late, was enough to cause the vomitting.

(years ago when I followed the dont eat protein and carbs together eating plan. if ever I did eat them together, I would vomit.)
I would increase Vit D3 and Magnesium to help settle the stomach.

other initial thoughts are

- nausea is one of the symptoms for Mast Cells/Histamine has this been an issue for you previously? the eating out meal event combined with season change maybe enough to cause ongoing nausea.
- agree with chemgirl, it maybe something like H-Pylori
-also agree with Tex, i would slow down or stop the Colestid, eat bland well small amount of ingredients meals for a couple of days and let the gut settle a bit.
