Calling All Cashew Lovers
Hi All,
I can't seem to tolerate any nuts, and peanut butter is bad news, but I can tolerate almond butter just fine. So I thought I would try some cashew butter. My search for a product that was free of all my intolerances, including the requirement that it be manufactured in a peanut-free facility, led me to the one at the link below. As far as I can tell, it's an excellent product, and it lives up to all of the claims made about it.
When used to top off a frozen banana, the combination makes a mighty tasty snack. If you enjoy (and can tolerate) cashew butter, this seems to be an awesome product. Just be aware that this is a BIG jar of it.

Thanks, Tex, for that. I eat the almond butter just fine, and I've done well with the Lara Bars and many of them have cashews in it so I'm guessing I would do ok with cashew butter. That is a mighty large jar though. Wow!

Jari,
That 12 oz jar is also available on Amazon. It's just more expensive that way. If you happen to be a member of Amazon Prime, 2-day shipping is free. Without Prime though, iHerb has a better deal.

They also make a 7 lb. pail for cashew addicts.

I eat a lot of cashews and cashew butter. I tolerate them better than almonds, probably due to the lack of skin. I also soak them and blend them with water to make milk. Great tip (if you can eat salad) -- add a spoonful of cashew butter to vinaigrette and you have instant caesar or goddess-like thick dressing. I also make a cashew butter dressing with lemon juice and spices. Good dairy-free veggie dip.

I'm not sure I've done it with balsamic. I've used lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and rice vinegar, plus olive oil, salt, garlic powder, and a few green spices (like McCormick all-purpose salt-free seasoning), or oregano.

Tex, would almond butter be high in histamine? Last night I ate probably a Tbs of it and my throat started to tighten then my nose started to drain, followed by WD. I did have my hair colored yesterday as well, which I'm sure didn't help. I've eaten small amounts periodically and never noticed it. Just wondering if I have kept it too long causing higher histamine? Then I took my corn containing antihistamine so I could sleep, now it's a ripple effect. I'm itching today, just took the chlor. Maleate going to see if it's safe. Hoping to get back to my safe food , no meds, and get back on track....
Thank you!
Thank you!

Martha,
Yes, cashews are considered to be a high histamine food. However a relatively small to moderate amount such as a tablespoonful shouldn't be a huge histamine dose. Cashews are related to poison ivy, and parts of the plant (and the "fruit" from which the cashew nuts actually grow), contain urushiol oil. It's not likely, but it's possible that some cashew nuts might be cross-contaminated during processing.
The throat and nose reactions are analyphactic symptoms, so they should have begin within about 10 to 15 minutes or so of the exposure. So if the reaction began in that approximate time frame after eating the cashew butter, you are apparently allergic to it. That said, hair coloring is a known problem for MCers, and presumably that would cause a delayed reaction. It wouldn't seem likely though that hair coloring would cause anaphylactic symptoms. But nothing surprises me about the possible effects of MC, anymore.

Wow, Tex, thanks for bringing this to our attention. I ordered the smaller jar to try and also see how I do with it, received it yesterday, tried it out, and it's to die for! I like it better than the almond butter! I'll be ordering the larger jar next time.
