Magnesium And Depression

Post by tex »

We frequently see posts on this forum by members who are seeking a safer way to treat depression after they discover that the antidepressant they are using triggers MC. MC is a depressing disease, and frequently resolving the MC symptoms will also resolve depression symptoms.

But for many of us depression is due to a secondary cause — magnesium deficiency. Magnesium deficiency is very common in the general population. In fact, it is thought that most people in the general population probably have a magnesium deficiency. And not only do IBDs deplete magnesium (because of the malabsorption problems that they cause), but many medications (such as corticosteroids and antibiotics) frequently used by IBD patients (including MC patients) significantly deplete magnesium. Furthermore, stress depletes magnesium. Few diseases are more stressful than an IBD. So it's very, very likely that most IBD patients will be magnesium deficient.

And guess what? Magnesium deficiency commonly causes depression (among many other problems).
Magnesium is one of the most essential mineral in the human body, connected with brain biochemistry and the fluidity of neuronal membrane. A variety of neuromuscular and psychiatric symptoms, including different types of depression, was observed in magnesium deficiency. Plasma/serum magnesium levels do not seem to be the appropriate indicators of depressive disorders, since ambiguous outcomes, depending on the study, were obtained. The emergence of a new approach to magnesium compounds in medical practice has been seen. Apart from being administered as components of dietary supplements, they are also perceived as the effective agents in treatment of migraine, alcoholism, asthma, heart diseases, arrhythmias, renal calcium stones, premenstrual tension syndrome etc. Magnesium preparations have an essential place in homeopathy as a remedy for a range of mental health problems. Mechanisms of antidepressant action of magnesium are not fully understood yet. Most probably, magnesium influences several systems associated with development of depression. The first information on the beneficial effect of magnesium sulfate given hypodermically to patients with agitated depression was published almost 100 years ago. Numerous pre-clinical and clinical studies confirmed the initial observations as well as demonstrated the beneficial safety profile of magnesium supplementation. Thus, magnesium preparations seem to be a valuable addition to the pharmacological armamentarium for management of depression.
The red emphasis is mine. Note that the first sentence in red confirms my claim that the blood tests are worthless for determining magnesium levels. Here's a link to the medical reference for that quote:

Magnesium in depression.

So my general recommendation to anyone who is either taking an antidepressant or feels that one would be helpful:

You are almost certainly magnesium deficient. Before you consider taking an antidepressant, please increase your magnesium intake and your depression may be resolved. And if you are already taking an antidepressant, please increase your magnesium intake so that you can wean off the antidepressant you are taking.

If you need more convincing, consider these case studies from the Psychology Today article at the following link:
A 59 y/o "hypomanic-depressive male", with a long history of treatable mild depression, developed anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and insomnia after a year of extreme personal stress and bad diet ("fast food"). Lithium and a number of antidepressants did nothing for him. 300mg magnesium glycinate (and later taurinate) was given with every meal. His sleep was immediately restored, and his anxiety and depression were greatly reduced, though he sometimes needed to wake up in the middle of the night to take a magnesium pill to keep his "feeling of wellness." A 500mg calcium pill would cause depression within one hour, extinguished by the ingestion of 400mg magnesium.

A 23 year-old woman with a previous traumatic brain injury became depressed after extreme stress with work, a diet of fast food, "constant noise," and poor academic performance. After one week of magnesium treatment, she became free of depression, and her short term memory and IQ returned.

A 35 year-old woman with a history of post-partum depression was pregnant with her fourth child. She took 200mg magnesium glycinate with each meal. She did not develop any complications of pregnancy and did not have depression with her fourth child, who was "healthy, full weight, and quiet."

A 40 year-old "irritable, anxious, extremely talkative, moderately depressed" smoking, alchohol-drinking, cocaine using male took 125mg magnesium taurinate at each meal and bedtime, and found his symptoms were gone within a week, and his cravings for tobacco, cocaine, and alcohol disappeared. His "ravenous appetite was supressed, and ... beneficial weight loss ensued."

Thanks, Tex. I won't go to bed without magnesium gel on my thighs.

I bought some magnesium oil. Where should I apply it on the body and how much?

I put mine;
- on top of legs each time i go to the loo (mine is a spray and i have it in small spray bottles around the house)
- legs, arms, neck, stomach when i get up
- neck of an afternoon
- legs, arms, neck, stomach of a night

it can go a bit chalky after 10 minutes or so - if this is uncomfortable wash off after 20 mins

Thank you Gabes. I bought the spray bottle as well. They are good ideas.

I have to spray it in my hand and wipe/rub it on me where ever seems feasible. My husband didn't like the residue it left when I was spraying it freely (I think he slipped on the bathroom floor because of it). Oooops

Is it ok to not wash off the Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil (even though the directions say to wash it off after 20 minutes)? I would rather just spray it on before bed and sleep with it on. Thank you! ;)

Suzy,

I never wash mine off. I spray it on when I get out of the shower and then put lotion on over it...........have never had a problem.

My bottle (different brand) says nothing about washing it off. I don't wash it off and it is fine.

I made a homemade solution that was posted on here from someone, I apologize I am not sure who it was, with 4 tablespoons epsom salts and just water in a spray bottle to fill, I put it on after my shower and let it soak in and don't wash it off. I am wondering if it really is effective or am I kidding myself that it works, I have not seen any posts about this since so just wondering,
I put it all over, throughout the day as well to keep the amount constant.. I haven't tried the pill variety as my MC flare come in form of constipation not the diarrhea which is different I know from everyone else here isn't it.. so if I tried the pill form it could give me diarrhea which I definitely don't want
I appreciate your time and help. One day at a time with this disease and always learning new things,
Tex,
As a child my mother says I was constantly constipated no matter what she did to relieve me it always came back, now I wonder if I have had MC for much longer than I thought, having my depression in my teens and total hysterectomy because of tumors in my ovaries might have this all been linked to inflammation as well, because the tumors were 8 times the size of my ovaries , no cancer was found , the doctors were very puzzled, as they were certain the outcome would have been cancer once they did a biopsy. Before the operation I was told to prepare for bad news. This story had a happy ending despite having an MC official diagnosis, I still feel on top of the world and appreciate everyday I get to make my meals and eat not feeling sick, and if I get cross contaminated and feel ill, I know it is not fatal and I can fix this, and control once again how I eat, what I eat and where I eat and what I can't control I deal with the best I can. sorry for the long winded post. take care . :pigtail:
diagnosed with LC by biopsy

you may not have had MC in your childhood, but more likely it was Magnesium and Vit D deficiency that affected digestion and mental wellbeing in the early years.

if you did small dose oral magnesium - like half dose am and pm - along with the homemade spray, would be a good way to ensure you are getting enough..
