Plantains and commercial yogurt in starter diet?

Plantains and commercial yogurt in starter diet?

I'm just starting my recovery. I plan on chicken or Mahi Mahi, white rice, mashed potatoes plus one banana a day. Can I use cooked mashed plantains or commercial plain yogurt? Can I use a bit of butter? How about heavy cream?

Hi Lizabelle,

Welcome to our Internet family. Chicken might work, but some of us are sensitive to it. Turkey or lamb on the other hand seem to be well tolerated by virtually everyone. Likewise for white rice, potatoes, bananas, or plantain — most of us can tolerate those. Most of us cannot tolerate yogurt, butter, cream, or any other dairy product, but there are a few exceptions among the members here who can tolerate dairy products after they are in remission. Whether you can safely eat those products depends on whether your immune system produces antibodies to casein, the primary protein in milk and all dairy products.

That said, many members here who are sensitive to casein can tolerate clarified butter (ghee) if it is properly processed and filtered so that 100 % of the casein is removed. Also, Earth Balance makes a margarine that I believe is free of dairy, gluten, and soy ingredients. Some members here use it in place of butter.

I found turkey breast was a very satisfying source of protein in the early days.

Welcome Lizabelle,

My beginning diet consisted of nothing but baked chicken, white rice, and 1 banana a day. I ate that for about 2 months several times a day. It really helped me heal. Bland really works the best for healing. I can handle some spices now, but I sure couldn't then.

You have come to the right place , so much helpful information and support here. most of all have patience with your body and know it takes time to figure it all out. :pigtail:

I'm an exception to the dairy rule: I do wonderfully with butter, heavy cream, hard cheeses like aged gouda & sharp cheddar, homemade yogurt (24 hour variety), especially strained, and many of the organic commercial yogurts, specifically ones with 5 or more cultures. - Lactose is my problem, so I just avoid that and am fine.

I cannot have: nuts, seeds, nightshades, alcohol or sugar alcohol(like Truvia), pumpkin, acorn squash, any other squash more than 1/2 cup, large amounts of certain fruit (like 1 lb in one sitting), carrots, spinach and mushrooms. I have food allergies to grains, legumes, potatoes, shellfish, eggs and nutritional yeast, and coconut, so I don't eat those anyway. Aspirin is a trigger, also, as is White Willow Bark.

The point of my long lists above is that it will take some trial and error, and you may find things are triggers which are safe for others.
