Changing Brands

Post by crervin »

Well I've been spending quite a bit of money on my diet alone, not to mention along my 3 growing children and my still growing husband  .
So I decided to try a cheaper version of almond milk (walmart brand). Sadly it took a few days to figure out this brand doesn't agree with me. It also goes to show that this disease is so fine tune! One tiny ingredient can cause problems, it's probably a teaspoon. That's why it's so important to only eat with minimal ingredients.

Sadly, I will buy the more expensive almond milk and forget my penny pinching!

On the brighter side don't give up on the product, just change brands 😀.

Lesson learned!

one of reasons why the main part of my eating plan is whole foods.... meat and veges..

and the other reason, has been proven and made it into the media here in Aus this week
A newly published study quantifying the cost of gluten-free foods shows a family with two children can pay up to 17 per cent more for a gluten-free diet, with the cost blowing out for single men on welfare.

Study shows high costs of attempting to live gluten-free
Single men on welfare could spend 75 per cent of income on food
Researchers call for Government to help those with medical need for gluten-free food
The Dieticians Association (DAA) of Australia said the results published in its scientific journal Nutrition and Dietetics "demonstrates for the first time that a gluten-free diet is a significant financial burden for many Australian family types".

The study, conducted by University of Wollongong researchers Kelly Lambert and Caitlin Ficken, compared a gluten-free diet with a regular weekly shopping basket using data from supermarkets in five varying suburbs in the Illawarra region south of Sydney.

"The most discrepant food item was actually flour, so it was 570 per cent more expensive to buy gluten-free flour than it was for plain flour, so even making things from scratch is exorbitantly more expensive," said Ms Lambert, who is also a dietician at Wollongong Hospital.

Wholemeal bread was found to be nearly five times more expensive.

Yes Gabes, it's crazy expensive! I have stopped buying the enjoy life cookies, too costly plus they have loads of sugar. My mom is making gluten free bread for me that I eat occasionally with nut butter and honey for a sweet snack. Gf store bread costs 9 bucks a loaf. This bread has 5 ingredients and I can tolerate it well. I use duck egg whites.

I have a neighbor who is doing this diet after not recovering from food poisoning a year ago. She's spending a fortune on farm co-ops trying to get fresh meats free of everything. We don't have a lot of farms in our area. I'm just sticking to one turkey right now cause I can't afford that.

Martha,

If you can tolerate bananas, banana bread makes sort of a tasty snack by itself, and you could certainly add nut butter and/or honey or maple syrup if you really wanted to sweeten if up.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks tex, I could add bananas to that bread mix too. I have been enjoying the frozen bananas with nut butter.
