Attn newbies - what is Methylation

Post by Gabes-Apg »

some of our recent newcomers may have seen methylation mentioned in discussions

this article is a good layperson explaination.
it has some good diet suggestions on how to improve methylation.
(which is another reason why good protein is important)

some of the suggestions do not suit MC'ers eating plan, like anything we have to tweak and modify to suit our MC management plan

Good article for us newbies. I just don't know where I stand in the B vitamins? Any suggestions? Or for now just a complex one?

at this early stage of your journey, i suggest you stick with figuring out your safe eating plan... and Vit D3 and magnesium

Thank you for this article and the education! Gabes, what do you think about taking methylated B vitamins? I was tested for/diagnosed with MTHFR several months prior to my LMC diagnosis, so had started on Thorne Methyl Guard Plus and the multi-vitamin Thorne 2/Day. I was also put on methylated B12 (the equivalent to a B12 injection) daily. (I do supplement Vit D/K and Magnesium also, as of past 5+ months). When my LMC symptoms began, I went off all supplements and went to the bland diet, of course. As my symptoms have improved, I've gone back on carefully chosen supplements including the methylated vitamins mentioned above, and while I'm tolerating them well, it's hard to know if they're helping.

Since the B vitamins are water soluble, is there any harm to taking them? For some of us at an older age, we may have been having symptoms (including depression and anxiety in addition to physical symptoms) related to not being able to absorb the B vitamins we were taking for decades! Looking back, there were so many meds that didn't work for me. May have been related (at least in part; there seems to be a scientific acknowledgement now of the relationship between pure folate and mental health) to this methylation issue.

It is so interesting that this issue comes up frequently within the MC community. I feel as so many others do ... so incredibly grateful to this forum and to each one of you who are providing such wonderful information, support, friendship, feedback, sharing what you've learned ... and I could go on and on!! Thank you!!

Methylation is different for each person

There is more to Methylation than just the MTHFR genes, there are 30-40 gene SNPS that are linked to the methylation cycle.
and the combo of the results within this group, makes interpretation complex.

in my case, I did not have either of the MTHFR gene SNPS but did have major methylation issues. based on my results, I do better with two different forms of B12.
as you may have seen from discussions, life in MC world is trial and error for each person. We have to learn to listen to our bodies and figure out what works best for you.

hope this helps
