Budesonide Question
I'm new to this group and just learning about MC. My mom is 76 and was just diagnosed with MC. She was put on 6mgs of budesonide a day, about week and a half ago. This is the first medication she has been prescribed for this condition. We have been watching her diet (ie wheat, fiber etc.) and she eats very little because she is still having massive diarrhea. My question is about how long should it take for budesonide to work at this dose and should we consider increasing the dose to 9mgs at this time or wait. Also any advice on a pharmacy were I can get this med. cheaper than $4.88 for 3 mgs. I know there are a lot of pharmacies online that carry this med. cheaper but I'm not really into getting ripped off. Thanks.
HI Sunflower,
I can't comment on where might be the cheapest but I will make a mention that most people are prescribed 9mg to begin with, as they also go Gluten, Dairy, Soy and Egg free alone eliminating those foods will help a person slow or stop the diarrhea. MC is tricky and sometimes even while on Budesonide it won't mask the symptoms, and it may take a couple weeks for the med to absorb and do what its supposed to be doing.
A lot of people do this MC healing without med because once on a med such as Budesonide there is a very long tapering to it up to 6 months even so that one does not relapse and go back into a flare.
I'm sorry your mom is having to deal with this in her 70's, I'm sure my mom who just turned 69 if she had not had an ileostomy she would be having the same symptoms as all of us with MC get, at this time she is doing great after having had 13 inches of large intestine removed.
My suggestion is to omit the four types of foods above as this will eventually become the new normal as you both will learn after reading many success stories and healing ways on this forum. Also how is her VitD levels (between 50-80 would be considered good while trying to heal the gut) and does she take or topically apply any magnesium?
Warmly,
Erica
