Bactrim

Post by Marcia K »

I have avoided the need for antibiotics since my diagnosis almost three years ago. But my luck ran out when the dreaded UTI reared its head. I haven't had a UTI since the 80's. I took D -Mannose but I don't think I took it soon enough. When I knew I was going to pull an all-nighter I went to the after hours care. I took the list of antibiotics from this site and was prescribed Bactrim. I have never taken Bactrim before and I had no ill effects from it. I am very happy to report that I did not get D! What a relief! I'm thinking the UTI might be from a new product that I used just that one time because they were out of Replens but I guess I'll never know because I'm not going to use it again! I'm so grateful for this site and all that I've learned on here.

It quite a whew! Now that it is behind me I can stop thinking "what if I have to take an antibiotic". Turns out it wasn't the end of the world after all. 😉

That is why i am happy to keep this group as website in current format (and it not be a FB group etc)

you can search for discussions on key topics like this, the information is there when you need it.

just like I have the names of soy printed in my purse, I also have the MC safe type antibiotics list in my purse 'just in case'

Martha, I took 2 tablets a day for 5 days. I have prescription coverage with my health insurance plan and it only cost me $1.72. I thought I heard her incorrectly at first. I totally agree about this site, Gabes. I didn't realize rosemary is soy until you mentioned it. I have learned so much on here!

I just put a call back to my Dr. right now after reading this because of all things I got a UTI starting this last Sunday....never had one before - 3 days was plenty of being uncomfortable and not knowing what I was experiencing....and and I do not want to upset my already fragile guts with Sulfa which is what he was prescribing me.

Thank you !!!

I need to print off the med list again and keep it in my purse this time!

Rosemary is SOY??? Really? That is totally new to me. Shows what I have to learn. I tried googling it. Came up with zilch!
Bactrim causes me terrible D. I have ongoing UTIs and am struggling with abx. Currently on penicillin. D Mannose doesn't help me. It used to help with symptoms but not anymore. So I am hoping correcting a magnesium deficiency will help with this too.

I hope it works for you, Erica! I didn't feel fatigued while on it like I have when taking other antibiotics in the past. It kicked in quickly, too. Gabes, I started checking everything for rosemary flavoring and just as you said, it is in most ground turkey and I eat it quite often. I found some at Costco that is clean.

Erica,

Bactrim is a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. I found out that I was allergic to it when I took it about a year and a half ago, and it finished off what was left of my magnesium reserves.

Good to know. I'm assuming since I've been allergic to sulfa drugs since childhood, this wouldn't be a good drug for me. I certainly hope all of you currently with the UTI problems get these solved quickly and with no unwanted side effects.

Yikes, I didn't know about the rosemary flavoring either ...

FWIW, my doc claims that Bactrim is well-tolerated by most people and he seemed surprised that I reacted to it.
