Cholestyramine Dosing

Post by terre »

Could anyone that has taken Cholestyramine share with me how they took this med. I tried it for 5 weeks (twice a day - 1 AM & 1 PM) with no success, but I may have needed to take it differently. I felt after 5 weeks that it was depleting my vitamin K and stopped using it. Anyone have issues with this?

Has anyone reached remission with it.....how long did you take the med?

Thanks,
Terre

PS: I made sure I took my other medications away from the Cholestyramine.

Terre,

How does one know that certain things deplete one's K-vitamin? How do you notice it?

I posted this awhile back....I just kind of stumbled upon the fact that it was happening.
I have Rosacea and if you have it, you're aware of the broken veins in your face. Today, I went for a laser treatment (which I have done many times) and was asked what I was doing differently? As in products, meds, etc. I told her I had been taking a new med and as we discussed further, I remembered it could cause a deficiency in the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, K....when I got to K she immediately said "that's what it is" she couldn't get the veins to blanch and she had already pointed out some spots on my face and neck and after our discussion, she attributed those to possible K deficiency. So, that along with the fact it wasn't actually helping the D has led me to the decision to stop.
Also, that same visit, the veins bled under the skin bruised, which had never happened before. I had forgetten about the purple spots that had begun appearing.

Lilja
the main purpose of Cholestraymine is to bind to the bile.
In the digestion process Bile is the key part of the process to help the body absorb fat soluble vitamins like Vit D, Vit K, Vit B12 etc.

I know from the Biotoxin forums where people are taking the max dosage, 4 times a day, they also quickly become Magnesium deficient.

Terre,

I have been on Sandoz regular cholestryamine for the past year. I started at 1 scoop with breakfast and 1 scoop with my meal in the evening. I am currently on 1 scoop/day in the afternoon. By following a strict diet I have found that I have been able to lower the dose of cholstyramine. I did try stopping it about a month ago, but many of my gut symptoms came back, so for me the medication has shown some benefit. I am not 100 percent free of symptoms, but I have fewer symptoms and more predictability with my bowels.

Thanks for sharing with me Donna. Do you supplement with any vitamins it can deplete (A, E, K)......have you increased the amount of Vitamin D and B12? I may investigate this med again and discuss dosing with doc.

Fewer symptoms and more predictability are good things!

Thanks again,
Terre

Terre,

I do take supplements, no Vitamin A, I track what I eat via Cron-o-meter and found that I get plenty of A by just eating a small amount of sweet potato. I supplement with vitamin E by using red palm oil, that is a recent change for me. I do supplement with vitamin K, the B vitamins, magnesium and calcium. Sometimes I have to back off the supplements because my gut starts acting up and then restart them again.

When I met with my PCP I asked her to write the prescription for 2 doses/day so I could figure out what works best for me.

I know there are side effects with taking cholestryamine such as interfering with vitamin and minerals so I follow the instructions and take the supplements an hour before or 4 hours after the medication. That is another reason I am trying to stick with one dose/day. However, when I have frequent loose stools I don't think I am getting much vitamin and mineral absorption, so I figure since the Cholestyramine gives me a slightly better quality of life I will take the risk. The other thing I have been doing since June is following the AIP diet and I feel that has also been helping with symptoms.

Hi Terre,

My doc prescribed 1 pack (sachet) twice a day. I started with 1/2 pack once a day. Someone mentioned to start with a half pack then go up if need be.
Twice a day would have caused major constipation.

Hey Brandy, so glad you were able to take smaller dose.

I took it once a day for 3 days....no improvement at all. Then took it twice a day for 5 weeks and it helped with urgency and frequency, but still D. I'm just that "odd-man-out"....I've always seemed to be the "difficult" patient!

If I take it again, I'm going to make sure to supplement fat soluble vitamins and I may have to take it more often....not sure how I'll work my supplements and regular meds around that schedule.

Thanks for sharing,
Terre

I used cholestryamine when I was first Dx with MC, for my medication /supplement protocol I was taking it late of a night. I would set an alarm to take it at 11pm.

Thanks for the tip Gabes! I take regular medications that have to be taken before bed and if take the Cholestyramine more than twice a day, I'll have to get inventive on when to take everything.

Hi Terre,

There are folks on the web that take higher doses for some situations. I think I read some folks take 3, 4 or 6 packs a day. I can't remember if the folks had cholestorol situations or no gall bladder or crohns but I remember some folks are taking higher doses. I have not seen these doses talked about on our forum.

on the Mould/Lyme/Biotoxin forum, a dosage of 4 packs a day is normal protocol for those with chronic issues.

in my time here on the PP Forum i dont recall anyone taking more than 2-3 packs a day.
