Has anyone taken this med? I did an Archives search, but nothing came up. Just curious if anyone had tried it.

Terre,

Viberzi is a μ-opioid (mu-opiod) receptor agonist, similar to morphine. If you decide to take it, be alert to the possibility of impaction problems and if constipation/impaction symptoms appear, don't let the problem get out of hand before doing something to resolve it. Opioids will slow down motility, but they are notorious for causing impaction problems that can become very serious if not promptly resolved.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Wow Tex! Thanks for the heads-up. I just heard of a lady (who thinks she has IBS) taking it and it's really helping her problems. I don't know her, so I can't get her personal perspective. I'm not even sure what her symptoms are....seems like she was a colicky baby and has had issues her whole life and she's probably in her 50's.

Gosh, aren't opioids addictive? Or since it's a mu-opioid is it in a different class?

Thanks for your input,
Terre

Terre,

Yes, they tend to be highly addictive. Mu-opioids activate mu-opioid receptors directly, and things such as alcohol, marijuana, and nicotine activate them indirectly. I believe that Viberzi is often prescribed for IBS.

But this class of drugs is currently undergoing investigation due to widespread addiction problems apparently caused by it being overprescribed by many doctors. It's possible that more people have become addicted to drugs because of prescriptions written by their doctors, than by drug pushers. Congress sent a bill to the president's desk for signature in mid-July, but it didn't include funding arrangements, so I'm not sure what will happen there. You can read more about the details of how these drugs work at the following link:

How does the opioid system control pain, reward and addictive behavior?

FWIW, I was a colicky baby, also, and I can recall constipation issues from my early memories of childhood. We did a poll, 7 years ago:

Did You Suffer From Colic, When You Were A Baby?

You're very welcome,
Tex

Thanks for the link Tex....I think I'll put Viberzi on the back burner, not interested in any addiction problems. Folks don't think they are addicts if it is a med that their doctor prescribed. Those poor mice!

My mom had seven kids and she has passed away. I have no idea if I was colicky or not. I just know I had no issues eating as a child....we were poor and ate anything that was put on the table!

Have a great day!
