Is there a safe antibiotic for conjuctivitis?

Post by sseven »

Hi,

I haven't posted for some time but doing fairly well with my "everyday diet." We babysit for two young grandkids and about 7-10 days ago, they came down with pink eye. This morning, my right eye was mattered shut and looks like pink eye. Any suggestions for safe treatment for this condition? The kids had antibiotic drops for their eyes. Thanks for any help. Sharon

Hi Sharon,

If you're concerned about using antibiotics and want to try toughing it out, in more than half of cases, conjunctivitis will clear up by itself in 1 or 2 weeks. But if antibiotics are needed, topical antibiotics will normally do the job, and these shouldn't have a significant effect on the gut. Only in severe cases are oral antibiotics needed to clear up a persistent infection.

Be aware though that (as you have found) conjunctivitis is very contagious, so you will need to be careful to not spread it to others until your symptoms are resolved.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thank you, Tex. I did get drops from the doc and started them already.

Thanks again for all you do here and the others who post, as well. It has been a lifesaver for me these last 2+ years and, even though I don't post much, I usually don't let a week or two go by without checking in.
