Loss of appetite?
Is loss of appetite common with LC? Or is psychosomatic like people keep telling me? Between the nausea and lack of appetite I'm really struggling.

Kelly,
Believe it or not, those symptoms are due to neurological issues caused by a chronic magnesium deficiency. Before I figured out my magnesium deficiency, I went to the ER because one morning I just couldn't persuade myself to eat breakfast. Not only did I not have an appetite, but forcing myself to eat just made me feel worse.
Doctors blame the "morning sickness" associated with pregnancy on all sorts of things, but the real cause is hormonal changes that prevent the absorption of magnesium. Research shows that women who take extra magnesium prior to, or early on, during pregnancy, can prevent or at least minimize "morning sickness".
IBDs (including LC) deplete magnesium. Corticosteroids (including Entocort/budesonide) deplete magnesium. Many other medications deplete magnesium. Even coffee depletes magnesium. As a result, virtually all LC/CC/MC patients are magnesium deficient. Of course some of us have much more serious deficiencies than others and symptoms can vary. But the solution is a good magnesium supplement.
Poor digestion can also cause nausea, because if digestion is poor, food can remain in the stomach too long, and if it begins to ferment in the warm, moist environment, that causes nausea. Insulin resistance/diabetes can also cause the problem. Doctors call this condition (delayed stomach emptying) gastroparesis.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

if you are doing the eating plan changes and starting the supplements, you body and gut chemistry would be changing.
that with the mental and emotional aspects of what you are reading and processing regarding life with MC, loss of appetite is not unusual.
it will take a few weeks for the magnesium levels to increase. in the meantime it may take a bit of mental energy to try and look forward to eating.
the other thing i have found is that loss of appetite/nausea can happen when i am not eating enough protein.
hang in there

I have not had my "normal" appetite for 9 months and have to keep reminding myself to eat something. I always feel better after forcing myself to eat protein and it is a constant daily routine. Every once in a while I feel hungry for something and I go with the flow, usually with good results. Even have tried odd foods that are not part of my restricted diet and have done okay. I try to listen to my my body and have not run into trouble so far. Of course I don't stray very far from the safe foods, but a Frito every now and again is heaven!
