Tamiflu or not???
Hey guys,
My daughter woke up with 103 degree temp. Today she tested positive for influenza A. Its an epidemic in our area. 55 kids out of 300 kids out this week due to it. Tamiflu is $284 and they prescribed it to her....any thoughts on that drug??
Well since I have posted, my husband and I have concluded no on giving her the med. Everyone take care and stay healthy. My daughter's hands were chapped last night from washing so much, so I guess it's inevitable.....
Thank you guys!!

Hi Martha,
I'm sorry that your daughter has to deal with the symptoms, but as a result, her immune system will benefit from it to better prepare it for future exposures to similar virus strains. From what I've read, Tamiflu can cut approximately 1 day off the recovery time. And of course "can" is a far cry from a guarantee. But I can't help but wonder if it might also undo some of the immune system benefits that might otherwise be gained without it.
I think you and your husband made the right decision. If Tamiflu were really effective, it might be worth a shot, but IMO it's just not effective enough to be worth the cost and the trip to pick it up, in most cases. If you want to try to treat the flu, the most effective way is with megadoses of vitamin D.
If I thought that I were coming down with a serious strain of flu virus (such as a bird flu variation), I would take 150,000 IU of vitamin D daily, beginning as soon as I identified/recognized the symptoms, and I would continue that dose until the symptoms began to resolve. That's a therapeutic dose originally recommended by Dr. Cannell of the Vitamin D Council, FWIW. Kids would need a smaller dose, roughly 1,000 IU per lb.
That said, for ordinary flu strains, the Vitamin D Council tones down their recommendation to about a third of that dose. Their article at the following link includes 29 medical references if you are interested in reading more on the subject.

I hope she recovers quickly.

Things like Zinc and Vit C are very useful - the immune system will need them if you are fighting germs.
whenever I get a cold or flu, i take high doses of Vit D3 and zinc - and REST.
I also use things like eucalyptus spray to minimise germs in the house especially in shared areas.
lounge rooms etc.
being a bit of a toxin phobic, I would wash her clothes, bedding and towels separately until she is recovered.
(using eucalyptus based product and cleaning vinegar in the washing machine)

Thank you so Gabes! Good information....this reminded me of her toothbrush. I forgot about that. We all use separate toothpaste. It drives my husband crazy, but I write our names on the toothpaste.

I work in a long term care facility. We recently had 3 cases of the Type A flu and the vaccine isn't working this year. The entire facility had orders for Tamiflu as a preventive measure. So far there haven't been any new cases but how do you know if it was the Tamiflu or just the limiting of visitors and staff wearing masks, etc.? It's a roll of the dice. I wouldn't take the Tamiflu nor do I get the vaccine. I am so ready for spring!
Martha, I put our toothbrushes in the dishwasher at least one a week and I do change them when someone is ill.
Gabes, I love your comment about her husband. Unless someone walks in our shoes they will never understand our concerns!

Exactly Gabes! Never thought of that Marcia! I so hope your husband is doing better today!
My husband came down with the flu today. He has been taking care of our daughter, cause he knows I can't take any medicine. He's been a trooper. My boys have been walking around with face masks on . I need to too.
You guys take care....it looks like this flu has a domino affect .

Sorry to hear that you husband now has the flu, Martha. Masks and hand washing will help to keep it away from the rest of you. I sleep in the spare bedroom when my husband is sick. Sending healthy vibes your way!

Martha, hope everyone feels better soon!!
Had a sore throat and slight sinus drainage, mild considering what my family has been dealing with. I started increasing my Vit. C and Zinc when my family started getting sick 3 weeks ago. I've always switched toothbrushes out once a month even when everyone was well and more often when sick.

Well guys it took my daughter and husband 8 days to get over this. They slept most of those days. My husband is still not back to normal. Today I just got a message that my daughter's teacher now has flu type B.
My daughter is still coughing. I so hope she doesn't catch this other strain. Schools are closed in surrounding counties due to all of this sickness. Also norovirus is going around. It's never been this bad here.
Take care guys!!

What a bummer. That really would be bad luck to have to go through all that again.
A couple of weeks ago the local tv stations around here were running special reports on how flu cases were really escalating in this area. It turns out that there was an increase of about 200 cases in the county since the previous week. After that underwhelming report and after admitting that the flu vaccine this year misses the main strains going around, they urged everyone to go get their flu shots anyway. I haven't heard anymore on the subject lately, though.
Best of luck to all of you. It sounds as though you're in a really high risk area.

I've been using a vitamin D lamp in the winter time. Once I began using that I stopped developing colds/flu. Before it was common for me to develop a cold/flu once or twice during winter time.
Recently I began reading about light or sun therapy. I ran across a few other references to others that stopped or nearly stopped developing colds/flu during winter time after using a vitamin D lamp. There was a Russian study, where one group of workers labored under standard lighting. The other half worked under lights that were full spectrum (light bulbs that mimic natural sunlight in summer time), meaning they gave off some UV rays. The group working under the full spectrum lighting developed half the number of colds/flu compared to those working under standard traditional light bulbs.
The other mention I across was in a book and in a video made by John Ott. Dr. Ott pioneered the development of time laps photography. Due to his photography work he became greatly interested on the health effects light can have on living creatures. In this short film of his Dr. Ott discusses a group of workers positive health effects of infrequently developing colds while working under lights that gave off some UV. He talks about that about the 3:30 mark.
