nauseous
Hello!
Since my diagnosis, my doctor told me to go on pepto 1 tablet 3x a day. I have been taking the pepto but inconsistently. Some days maybe just one tablet sometimes 2. My bm is black but normal. I have been feeling better. This has been about two weeks. I have been gluten free for many years but recently went dairy and soy free. I have eaten nothing new, but today I am extremely nauseous, so nauseous I can barely work. Any ideas what this could be?

Hi,
I had that problem (serious nausea on some days) very often when I was recovering, and I just thought that it was part of the disease. But about 2 years ago I discovered that even though I had been taking a magnesium supplement, I hadn't been taking enough, and my magnesium deficiency was steadily becoming worse. After doing a lot of research I discovered that nausea is one of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency. If I were in that situation I would try increasing my magnesium intake to see if it helped. Many of us here take 300–400 mg of magnesium scattered through the day (with meals), and some of us take more.
But Pepto can also cause constipation. If that's the case, then the cause of your nausea would be constipation, resulting in slow motility.
I hope that some of this is helpful.
Tex

I think I am having a motility issue. Since being stable with no D the last six days on rice, applesauce, chicken bone broth then adding no preservatives no nitrates turkey slices from Costco I started getting a little more energy and felt the best today then anytime in the last three weeks. Although I'm eating more rice than actually my BMs. I thought I might be getting another D flare since I had tingling in my arms but in the last two hours it has calm down from drinking cold water, small peppermint sugar only candy and a few salty crunchy rice crackers with no other ingredients besides safflower oil. And a warm shower. The worst of the nausea has passed but not hungry at all. It's a feeling as if I would feel better if I had a BM but my body is not ready to do that yet.
Do you think it's time to add overcooked plain carrots tomorrow ( once I can get them from the store)?
I put off taking the Budesdine 9mg Rx because the diarrhea stopped on the diet I mentioned above. I have the medicine here ready to take when this becomes too much. But I wanted to give diet a chance this week to see if it would be possible to heal without Budesdine. Before I was weak and tired but besides burping and a little gas I did not have significant GI distress and yuckiness since having D over a week ago. I diet is so severely restricted and no fiber so the diarrhea has stopped but it may begin again if I add soft vegetables etc. in the past, I would know what to expect during a flare recovery meaning no diarrhea if I stuck to safe items but my body is not acting like it used to and I've never had a flare this long.
Some say they stop the medication when they become constipated but they probably are eating a more varied diet that I am right now which means that most have better motility.
Do most people who start this medication stop having nausea and other IBS non-D symptoms within a few days to a few weeks or do they still have digestive upset frequently despite bland dairy and gluten free diet?
I slept better last night since successfully digesting turkey for two days and hopefully I can say three days tonight or tomorrow!
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated, Tex or others.

in line with our discussion in the other thread, another symptom of magnesium deficiency is constipation.
taking magnesium orally (doctors best magnesium glyncinate is MC safe option) will assist motility, using the topical options will help the whole body.
have you read through some of the posts in the member success stories area?
by reading some of the recent posts there you will see that the combination of right eating plan, lifestyle adjustments, and fixing key nutrient deficiencies (Vit D, magnesium, active B's etc) that majority of the symptoms fade away and when there has been good gut healing people can expand their eating plan.
this journey of wellness, can take anything from 6 months to 2 years, depending on age, how long you have had issues, other health issues, lifestyle/life events (ie stress levels) etc.

Gabes,
I probably should've private message this to Tex since he is more familiar with what is going on with me via private messages. It's too soon for me to take magnesium. 3 weeks ago severe flare. I'm doing my best to read when I can but don't have a lot of energy and trying to keep my head in a good place so over reading daily is not good. Thank you for your reply and I hope Tex sees this message. I may copy into PM.

Gabes,
Thank you for your reply. I don't normally have significant motility issues except for when I'm having a regular flyer which is completely manageable despite the inconvenience and eating very bland. Three weeks ago I had a severe flareup which I've never had before in my life except for in 2002 when I could've had IBS or possibly MC. See my signature please. I was very healthy three weeks ago and managing fine but actually doing better than usual. I made the tactical error of eating at a restaurant for a charity event with a set menu and a extremely rich side dishes and key lime pie! I never eat that way and if I do have a bite of something rich. During a normal flare which I have handled on my own without any concern or anxiety because my body active like clockwork if I did certain things diet wise. I got cocky because I was doing so well and took risks. During a normal flare eating this much rice causes motility issues and I have to start adding other bland foods, soft tolerable vegetables and baked apple in small amounts. Since this is not a normal flare I'm more cautious and concerned. Since writing the original post this afternoon my nausea has passed from not eating anything except for rice crackers, decaf tea, coconut water and cold water and a small peppermint sugar only candy. I'm going to try to eat some turkey and apple sauce now. Hopefully it's motility issue and not a symptom showing I'm going to have D tonight. Normally it would happen sooner so I think I'm safe. Just wondering if I'm torturing myself and I should just get on the medication Budesdine. I've been three weeks at home and have no social life. Normally I bounce back within two weeks since the diarrhea normally it's only for one day but this time it continued. I am gluten and casein free. No gluten in the last four days and no casein since flare on 5/1/17. Little over three weeks ago.
I don't need magnesium right now internally. Just hoping for some advice and comments based on what I told you including the decision to start the medication or not. I have not had diarrhea in over a week because of being on a liquid diet after the last time followed by rice applesauce and coconut water for a number of days with formed BM and now 48 hours of eating small amounts of turkey without D. Previously I was tired and weak with not painful burping after eating and small amount of gas but this afternoon horrible nausea started and I think my body is telling me I need more than just over cooked rice, applesauce and turkey. Normally I would not have to ask anyone's advice about these things because my body acted like clockwork prior and now I'm second-guessing everything because the last three weeks my body did not bounce back from the brat diet that I started after May 1st severe 10 to 11 times diarrhea the first few days. I should've done liquid diet immediately and not had sourdough toast with margarine cinnamon and sugar throughout the first day. In the past I would do dry toast or crackers the first day but for some reason I didn't do it this time. I think my system was more irritated than a regular flare because of what I ate at the restaurant. I rarely eat out and if I do I'm usually careful to eat very simple and basic (no sauces or creamy stuff).
Boy that was a long post! Thank you for offering to offer advice. To take Budesdine or not! I want my life back but have to wait there benefits and risks. Your thoughts?

short term use of budesonide is very safe.
what we have seen over the years is that no one medication works for everybody.
and the optimal success of medications helping is impacted if the person has nutrient deficiencies.
my observation of things over the past 7 or so years of being here
-medication is a way of reducing intensity of symptoms while you sort out eating plan / lifestyle changes.
long term wellness is still reliant on right eating plan, fixing nutrient deficiencies
for some - not all, it can delay confirming the eating plan, as it will mask triggers a bit
- bland diet, with lifestyle changes and supplements is the slow way of resolving symptoms and healing.
there is no right way or wrong way, each of us have different aspects that impact the decision we make regarding medications etc
- budget (can you afford the mediation etc),
- career, if you are income earner and have to work etc
- partner/family demands, etc
dont overthink the symptoms like nausea - your body has been through a bit of a hell ride.
if you feel nauseaous, relax, drink water and listen to a podcast or an audiobook, do a relaxing task or spend time in nature. distract your mind and let the body work through the healing process.
I would stick to the basic ingredient eating plan you are doing for another week if the BM's are improved (and there is less urgency with the BM's)

Gabes,
Thank you for your reply and advice I really appreciate it. I'm doing better nausea wise now. Eating some more turkey and apple sauce. Maybe the next time I cook the rice in a few days since I have a supply already made I will cook it for a normal amount of time with less water than now if my next BM is formed. Since eating rice and since eating turkey the last 2 to 3 days I have 1-2 BMs. As I said what's coming out of me is smaller than the amount of rice.
I have never talked so openly on the Internet about this! ;-)
I appreciate you "holding my hand" through this !!! I feel such empathy for everyone that has gone through this type of severe flair for so long. After three weeks I've had moments of being a mess! Tough warriors out there!

I'll try to answer your questions. It's not clear whether the motility issue you mentioned is too fast or too slow.
Most people can tolerate well-cooked carrots.
If Entocort is going to work, it usually works within about 2 weeks, though occasionally it takes longer. Some people respond in 1 day. If it works, it usually relieves all symptoms for as long as it's used.

Thank you Tex,
Sorry to overburden you with so many questions. I will try to lean on others more for their experience.
To clarify, my motility is a bit slow with eating all the rice that is over cooked. I'm going every day (1-2 x's formed) recently but not a lot. I'm going to play it by ear and see when to add the mushy carrots. No nausea tonight thank goodness. Just burping after eating and sour tongue after eating rice sometimes. This happens to me when my system is off. Coated tongue down center along ridge even after brushing teeth. When I get over a flare I normally get over that or at least not as frequently.
Take care

Hi Wen,
I know you do not want to do Magnesium at this time....BUT....you need it, period.
Do 100% topical if you are afraid of it internally https://www.vitacost.com/life-flo-pure- ... ifeflo+mag and there is lotion too https://www.vitacost.com/life-flo-magne ... ta=lifeflo
These are both very good options and 16 sprays equals around 250mg and one teaspoon of the lotion equals around 150mg, you can apply it during different times of the day and it will help relax you in the evening to get better sleep. You want to aim for around 400-600mg a day and you may need to do this for a few Months, not days.....after a while as it gradually builds in your cells you can back off and maintain on a maintenance Mag dose of around 400mg a day.
Don't forget to maintain a VitD3 regimen, check your levels and if they aren't around the 50 mark you will want them at least in that area, along with the Magnesium as these two work in tandem
I feel for your situation, it is no fun to feel miserable.
Hugs
Erica

Erica,
Thank you for the hugs and link! What I meant is I'm not interested in taking any internal magnesium pills since I'm so new to having formed BMs since my flare 3 1/2 weeks ago on extremely bland 3 or four items diet.
I am happy to report that I continue to digest the turkey successfully and today no nausea and formed BM!!! Still burping after eating but it's not that painful kind. Gabes suggested yesterday that I remain on the rice, applesauce and preservative free turkey slices from Costco for another week depending on my BMs before introducing mushy carrots or anything else easy to digest. I'm also doing coconut water, decaf constant comment black tea with a teaspoon of sugar as well as chicken bone broth.
As I've mentioned elsewhere on here, my vitamin D level is fine at 50 from a blood draw in March. Unlike some on here I do not have chronic diarrhea except for this May 1 flare. I was eating a varied diet before and feeling good except for dealing with whiplash from a car accident and a frozen shoulder in December. Fortunately I haven't had any pain in those two cases lately.
The more I'm able to eat turkey and continue to have formed BMs the less anxious I am and the better I sleep. I don't have daily anxiety like some people do. It's only during high stress situations and this has been stressful. I will look into the product you shared.
My goal is to feel good tomorrow and get my haircut and highlighted which I'm long overdue! I'm feeling pretty confident about going tomorrow. I can't wait to have my hair looking good!
Thank you for your kindness and support through this confusing time for me...

And your welcome
Regarding the Magnesium.....a daily RDA is at seast 300mg for women regardless of health, so that is why I recommend the Magnesium. It compliments the other vitamins and minerals you get on a daily basis. Plus it will also help maintain the healing and healthy cells required to remove toxins from the body on a daily basis.
I know you will take charge of your health
Keep up the good work!

Erica,
Thank you! I just read the reviews of both products. I have dermatitis, sensitive skin and for the last four months on and off get very itchy legs after shaving and sometimes on my hands near curve of my thumb. Since my flare I have not been shaving since it can wake me up in the middle the night - intense itching! The dermatologist gave me a cream which helps when the itchiness happens. The lotion has a strong vanilla scent which I can't do. I read that the spray causes burning and itchiness and some people and they have to dilute it. I am wondering if there is another product line out there that is already diluted and easy to use. I read some people have difficulty getting it out of the bottle since it hardens up. Any thoughts?
