Shakey

Post by HockeyMom »

Good morning all-
I've been up/down for weeks. Have good/bad days. Wonder about everything that goes into my mouth...which isn't much. Have cut out the oral Drs Best mag glycinate (only 100mg of that with lunch), sorta upped the avocado/sunflower butter trying to get more calories in...as pretty soon I am gonna blow away I think. I'm not talking constant horrible diarrhea or anything..in fact mostly we start out solid and go downhill from there. Getting to work every day obviously...Some days feel great, don't feel bloated or gurgly. Other days feel that way.. Really haven't had to take but 1/2 an immodium every once in awhile (read that as every few days or so). Have cut the cholestyramine down some wondering if I was taking too much at 2.5 packets a day....now doing 2 packets a day.

I have felt so shakey for the past few days. Never have had blood sugar issues to my knowledge but ???. Anyone?? I have put a teaspoon or so of honey into my tea on occasion with no real reaction. Am I having low blood sugar stuff now?? Just trying to get a handle on this. I continue to stick to turkey/elk and lamb and overcooked butternut squash/carrots/yellow squash and green zucchini. Plus sweet potato. Avocado and sunflower butter.

I feel like in general I am going the right direction but the shakes scare me. I truly need to put more weight on..and eating 80 pounds of meat a day isn't possible!!! I eat as much as I feel like I can!!

Thoughts???

Laine

Laine, so sorry to hear this! Have you tried the multi-vitamin patches from patchmd.com? That might help with the shakes, until you can get your diet on track.

Nope, hadn't given the vitamin patches much thought actually...I just figured feeling sort of shakey must be a blood sugar issue!!

Does it resolve after you eat something or is it constant? More frequent urination? If it resolves, I would think blood sugar. If it doesnt, I would think nutrient deficiencies...

Maybe someone with diabetes will chime in soon. So hope you get this resolved! This disease is a constant and ever changing roller coaster...

Laine,

When my magnesium deficiency began to become worse, I sometimes had periods of hypoglycemia symptoms. Here's a quote from one of Dr. Carolyn Dean's pages
12. Hypoglycemia- Mg keeps insulin under control; without Mg episodes of low blood sugar can result.
http://drcarolyndean.com/magnesium_miracle/

Also, I note that when my magnesium deficiency became critical, I had every one of the symptoms of hypoglycemia listed on that ADA site that Martha cited, except for headache, seizures, and unconsciousness.

In my opinion, hypoglycemia is another symptom of magnesium deficiency.

I've had problems for a few years with shakiness. I also believe I have benign essential tremors. It's usually worse when I write on paper. I remember my mother having issues as well. However, when my thyroid issues are being addressed the shakiness is much improved. Deb

Deb,

That can also be another symptom of magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium for Hand Tremors

Before I corrected my magnesium deficiency, one day I noticed my doc's PA entering "essential hypertension" on my record for the visit. When the guys in the white coats use the term "essential" it means "with no known external stimulus or cause; idiopathic". But there's a reason for everything. I no longer have essential hypertension (nor any other type of hypertension).

Thanks Tex. I think you're right about the magnesium. My shakiness has definitely improved since I improved my magnesium levels.

Thanks for all the input guys. Not sure I actually have a tremor with all this...I know what that is!! More of an overall feeling of just shakey/jumpy...if that makes any sort of sense at all. I'm describing it as shakey..and maybe that's not the right word here.

Yes, I do feel better after I eat. Not feeling shakey this am, and just eating now.

I get the magnesium thing Tex. Just wonder how much longer it takes to get the magnesium ship turned around...My guess is that I am getting like 700 mg
a day plus whatever is in the lotion I put on (doesn't say on the bottle)...cut the 100mg of mag glycinate a day as I wasn't sure about it....I appear to be caked in salty brine!!!! At least my legs and stomach...my arms already look skinny and wierd enough without adding a salty crust to them at work
I guess I can start putting it on my arms also, just wipe it off later on .....

Laine,

If you're getting 700 mg of (absorbed) magnesium a day you should see noticeable improvements in just a few days. If you've been using that much for several weeks or more and you haven't seen any benefits then something else may be going on. I believe I would drop my magnesium intake to 400–500 mg. If your EGFR is consistently above 60, then excess magnesium shouldn't be a problem. But too much magnesium can cause or exacerbate an arrythmia problem if kidney function is compromised. Of course too little magnesium can also cause arrythmia or various other cardiac issues.

It's easy to regulate oral magnesium because too much will typically cause D. But excess amounts of magnesium sources such as ReMag and transdermal administration won't unusually trigger D, so it's easier to get too much if kidney function is compromised.

Are you by any chance taking a calcium supplement? Calcium can prompt the pancreas to release insulin, which can cause a hypoglycemic event.

Hmmmm....

Well, it's all topical except the odd 200mg of ReMag that I am taking broken up during the day...otherwise it's all topical at this point. I have been doing that much for probably 5-6 weeks now. No, haven't taken calcium supplements in years. I did take calcium for YEARS (like from 18 years old to like 48 years old as that was the recommendation back then for women, especially women with osteoporosis in their family).

Never been told I have a kidney function issue and will have to look back at my online lab values to see if it was even tested...if not I wonder if I can do that at the Quest Lab over here in the Safeway store and bypass the Dr's office entirely.

I also need to call and set up a cardiologist appointment about that atrial tachycardia per the heart monitoring. My Huge Network PCP's office sent me a referral in the mail yesterday to go see someone and I was ok'd for 4 visits....plus this cardiologist is way out of the way in a different suburb of Denver. I am not chained to their network so well probably just call and set up an appointment with one of the groups that are based out of my hospital...4 visits?? Really, I can do whatever I want!!!

EGFR is calculated from creatinine level. If the creatinine level is above range, then the EGFR will be low. Normal creatinine levels usually correspond with normal EGFR levels. Creatinine results are usually reported as part of a comprehensive metabolic panel.

Just looked it up on patient portal Tex->

Glucose 83, BUN 13, serum creatinine .81, eGFR 83, BUN/creatinine ratio 16.... when done in 12/15 the numbers were similar...with BUN 10, serum creatinine .92, eGFR 72 and BUN/creatinine ratio 11... none of these were flagged by out of range on their system which didn't post range values next to them..

Those are good numbers. Your kidneys are in great condition.
