Bone broth from pork bones anybody?
Given various testing, I've decided to pull beef, and poultry from my list of things to eat for now. Since we didn't save any venison bones from hunting season ( if I'd only known ) I am going to try making bone broth from pork bones. I've searched the forum and googled a bit for suggestions on this but thought I'd just ask the question. Does anybody here make broth just out of pork bones? Got any tips for me?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Any type of bone will work per say, the ones that provide the more gelatinous broth is joint bones like ankles, knees, etc
A good trick to optimise the minerals from the bones (and this helps to make a low histamine broth ) is to bake the bones first (hour or so on high heat) and then boil for 2 hours.
the other option that you might be able to access is lamb bones. or buying cuts of lamb on the bone, roasting them, eating the yummy roast meat, keep the bones ( ie freeze them) for the next batch of bone broth.
I have done this with duck - roasted it, eaten the meat, kept the frame and then made Duck and Lamb bone broth.
hope this helps.

Hey Gabes:
When you say boil for 2 hours, do you mean when you're actually making the broth? Do you mean to pour off because it's pork, or to make the broth quickly to avoid histamine issues? I normally throw my broth in the slow cooker for a day but I've also discovered I'm having issues with histamine, so maybe that's just not a good idea for me. Since I'm still on phase one I'd just put apple cider vinegar in it and some salt. Good stuff?
I've got a few shoulder roasts I'm picking up tomorrow, so I'll be cooking roasts up and saving the bones for broth. So roast the bones again by themselves before brothing...?
You rock

I use big pot on stove, Yes I only slow boil roasted bones for 2-3hrs max, salt only, and this keeps the broth low histamine. (and freeze as soon as it cool enough to transfer to container)
I don't use acv as I don't like the smell while it is boiling
if the bones have been preroasted, no need to bake.

Hey Gabes:
Thanks for the feedback on the pork bone broth. It turns out the roasts I bought only give me a small amount of bones, but it was enough to make a batch of soup. Tastes ok in the soup, I didn't like just drinking it, just tasted like off water.
Just figured I would post back in case anybody was interested in my experiment. I'll probably look for a butcher to buy some bones from. The farm I buy meat from really only sells beef bones alone which isn't useful for me right now.
I'd like to buy a lamb and get all the bones from that, but lamb is SOOOOO much more expensive than pork. Not sure if I'll go there.
Anyway, thanks!

Hi Deb,
Kelly is an administrator. She's an IT pro, and with the recent appearance of my arrythmia issues I thought it might be a good idea to have someone else available who could keep this forum going if I had to be hospitalized or if I were otherwise unavailable to keep the wheels turning. Usually it can run itself, but that's not always the case.
It's not easy to find someone qualified who also has MC. I don't know if you were acquainted with Sally's old board, but the main reason why we had to create this one is because Sally hired an outside admin and he eventually took it away from her and ran it into the ground by failing to take care of business. We don't want that to happen to this one.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Tex is still THE man. Just figured he could use some backup, who couldn't right?

I have never liked bone broth as a drink - I only ever have it via cooking with it, either soup or stew, cook veges in it, poach eggs in it etc, savoury paleo type muffins etc
so far as sourcing bones, if you do not have reliable bone meat source nearby, Whole Foods do have things like lamb on the bone, and there are suppliers that you can purchase online and have the items delivered to you.
And thank you for giving your time and energy to supporting Tex and this group with your tech skills - much appreciated
