TSA precheck and broth in Stanley thermos

TSA precheck and broth in Stanley thermos

Aloha - we are going from Honolulu to a wedding in Orlando in 2 weeks and I wanted to see what others do about eating on the plane. I had called the airline months ago and they said call TSA. I called TSA and the person I spoke to said that with a doctor's note that I have a specialized diet, I should be able to bring my Stanley thermos with turkey broth and the meat, veggies and noodles. Somehow I do not quite believe that. I know it will come down to whoever is checking me in. Has anyone brought liquid in a thermos like that through TSA precheck and airport security? Any tips and insights / experiences are appreciated. Thanks in advance! Aloha girl

There are quite a few posts in the travel section of this forum. Many here have travelled internationally taking their own foods, some with letter from doctor and thus far I dont recall anyone having issues

this is a post I wrote over 6 years ago (when carrying liquids internationally was much stricter compared to now)

it has the suggested wording for the letter from your doctor

so long as you have good protein based meal before you travel, you will be ok with minimal intake during transit. (a bit like when we sleep at night we go without food for 8hours)
there are quite a few other suggestions in the posts in this section, safe cold meats etc.

Dear Aloha girl,

I've carried my own food when I flew internationally, but I didn't take any liquids. I have taken a plastic container of homemade fried rice, boiled eggs, gf rice millet swirls, and various commercial bars. I took raw baby carrots, but they are too noisy to eat on the plane.

I did also request a gluten-free meal, which all the airlines handled very well. However, that still left me open to dairy and soy contamination, which happened.

Since your flight is domestic, you probably can't request a special meal, if indeed they even serve meals.

If I were you, I'd bring a doctor's note, but have the meat, veggies, and noodles just moist, not actually in broth. And maybe not in a tall thermos that looks like it has liquid in it. I have a Zojirushi bento lunch set that is a thermos-type thing that you fill up with hot water, then you dump out the hot water. You can put hot food in two containers that slide down into the thermos and there is one container that you can put cold things in. I have not used that on the plane, though, as I got it as a gift after my last international trip.

Aloha - thanks to both of you. You have given me some good ideas that I think will help me navigate the TSA/security and the 13.5 hours of in the air travel itself. We fly to Newark straight from HI and have an hour long layover and then fly to Orlando. I saw that lunch 'kit' at Target the other day & it looks great for travel. I'll report back on what my experience is like. Mahalo nui loa!

Aloha girl,

I've flown out of the Orlando airport but I have not flown out of your originating airport.

For your return trip: TSA at Orlando airport is a zoo. There are literally about 1000 people in the TSA line and half of the people don't speak any English and have passports which slows the screening. As long as you have the broth/liquid drained out of your container you should have not problem with the food. i.e. Bring hot food but not in broth. Due to the chaos at the Orlando TSA I'd be inclined to have your letter as backup, no liquids in your foods and just let TSA xray your stuff like a regular person. I've had no problem bringing food through TSA in Orlando but I don't say anything....just let them xray everything and I have no liquids. Just me but I've never approached TSA about my food as I'm afraid I would be delayed 90 minutes or more while they try to find a supervisor etc. Have your letter as backup but if it were me I would just go through like a regular person....just my thoughts.

I've also flown through Newark. If anything it was more crowded than Orlando. I recall not being able to find a seat in the Newark airport and also lines at the ladies restroom once I found the restroom. (There are not many restrooms and it was hard to find them.) Just me but I'd probably try to use the restroom on the plane just before landing in Newark.

Keep us posted on how the Zojirushi works out. It looks like something I'd like to try.

The weather is great right now in Orlando. Have fun at the wedding!

PS. If you need a snack while you are driving around Orlando Publix (grocery store) boars head deli meat is all gluten free. You must specify boars head brand and not Publix brand at the deli counter.

I really appreciate everyone's wisdom. I will keep it on the 'down low' and not call attention to myself going through the TSA lines. I definitely will not have my food in broth then. I bought the Zojirushi bento lunch set and it will arrive a few days before we leave. I look forward to Orlando's Publix grocery store to try the gluten free boars head deli meat - Yum! Aloha Girl
