Imodium or diet or budenoside?

Post by fletch14 »

Hi,

I was diagnosed with collagenous colitis in February, and was on budenoside for 3 months (9 mg, 6, then 3)... I have not had any D issues since being on the budenoside, but about a week ago, my symptoms seemed to return (D and bad stomach cramping).

My doctor recommended I take imodium every day for 6-8 weeks and check back with him. Is that a normal option? Right now I have switched my diet to what is recommended on this website, and I am taking imodium. I have not had any D, but I am still having stomach cramping.

Should I do any budenoside instead of imodium? Is imodium effective in helping with this, along with the diet? Basically I don't know what is the best course of action. I have my mom's funeral in 2 weeks, and I am sure will be under a lot of stress and hope my stomach can hold it together!

Hi Fletch,

I'm sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Imodium slows down motility (the speed at which food goes through the digestive system). Budesonide suppresses inflammation. So they both only treat the symptoms, not the cause of the disease. The diet addresses the cause of the disease. It's safe to use either medication in conjunction with or separately from the diet. In fact, many patients use either or both medications to make life more pleasant and allow them to get out and about more freely while the diet changes are healing the gut. The cramps will fade away after the gut begins to heal.

Imodium is generally a very safe medication, and up to about 8 tablets per day can be safely used if necessary. It pretty much just postpones bowel movements. But only use as much as needed, because too much can cause constipation, resulting in cramps.

Budesonide is a corticosteroid, so with long-term use it can eventually adversely affect adrenal functioning and increase the risk of osteoporosis. But it is much safer to use than the non-encapsulated corticosteroids, such as prednisone, because it has less systemic effect. And when used with the diet, it is very effective for suppressing symptoms.

It's your choice whether or not you want to use either medication to ease the symptoms while treating MC with diet changes. A lot of people would probably say that the budesonode would be good insurance to get you past the stress of the funeral.

I agree with what Tex has said.

for now rely on medications. once you feel ready then embrace the diet changes recommended here, that will provide good foundation for long term wellness.

all the best for the next few weeks. Taking things like Vit D3 and having Epsom salt foot soaks is a good starting point to supporting your body during the period of increased emotional/physical/mental stress etc.

has anyone has ever postponed meds while trying the diet

Post by Ellen2 »

Never posted here. New to this forum and am grateful to have found it. I have have diarrhea for 4 months, got diagnosed with CC two weeks ago through colonoscopy and biopsied tissue. Bad news the colonoscopy created a small tear in my bowel and I had to have emergency surgery. I am ok and it may have been a blessing. I found this forum the day after my surgery so when I could eat, I started to go gluten, dairy, egg and soy free immediately. I cannot take any meds for 2 more week cuz the bowel has to heal. 3 days after starting the recommended diet my diarrhea subsided. Stools not firm, but amazing better and only in the early am. My question to all of you is ,"Has anyone has ever postponed meds while trying diet and what was the outcome?"

Ellen
welcome to the group (and sympathies that you had to find us... )

there are quite a few people that had quick and success result to eating plan changes and did not have to meds like budenside/entocort etc.

with that good a reaction to the eating plan changes, starting medications puts you at higher risk of having constipation issues, and given the outcome of your scope (the tear) constipation should be avoided.

spend some time in the Member Success Stories area - here you will see what others have done to minimise symptoms and get well.

hope this helps

Hi Ellen,

Welcome to our Internet family. Sorry about the bad scoping experience. It's a wonder that doesn't happen more often.

I have never used any medications to treat MC. I've been in remission for about thirteen and a half years now by diet changes only.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

Ellen,

I have never taken medication to control my MC. I use the GF diet. Apparently I am only intolerant to Gluten. I am able to eat eggs, dairy, and soy without any issues. Like you I saw improvement very quickly following a GF diet. I think I saw the improvement so quickly because I was fortunate to be diagnosed within 3 months of the starting the diarrhea symptom.

Good luck and sorry you had the complication from the colonoscopy.

THX Brenda,
Glad to here this. Did you go gluten, soy, dairy and eggs free at the beginning? or just try gluten free and it worked?

I never took any meds. I went immediately gluten, dairy, soy and egg free. I also can't eat chicken. It's been working for about 8 years (or there abouts).

At first I cut out dairy, eggs, and gluten. Soy hasn't bothered me.
