Help! D to C to D to C!
I could sure use advice. I was diagnosed Jan 4, 2017 with LC after several weeks of D, 5-7 times per day.
I immediately quit eating gluten and dairy.
I quit eating soy and egg via Enterolab on March 12.
Strict Stage One Diet, lots of homemade bone broth.
Began magnesium and vitamin D, 500-750 mg per day with Doctors Best glycinate and mag lotion. Tapered mag down some as time went on.
Budesonide Jan 10-May 4 with a slow wean off.
June, July mostly Normals.
Road trip end of July, with C (for years I have had C when I have traveled) I was very careful with my diet while traveling. Continued Mag and Vit D.
Returned home, four days later, gut pain, some WD, soft stools, GERD, then C set in.
August and Sept, C with occasional hard stools.
Increased fiber a lot, took Mag Citrate and some Mag Oxide. Colace helped once.
Sept 29, Very Soft stool, bad cramping, and then D on Oct 2.
Oct 3, flew to see girlfriends for a yearly girlfriend reunion. Food was easy as we all stayed together in one house. Fun time. Had D the morning I was to leave, took Imodium. This was not a stressful trip for me although I suppose I dwelt on the food I would need to buy, etc.
C the whole time I was away from home. A Colace barely helped.
Returned home Oct 11. Oct 13, WD, cramping.
Now, back to C.
How do I navigate these waters? C is nice only because I can eat fiber but I know that C is not good for me. Never knowing when the other shoe will drop is difficult. I am taking plenty of Mag and Vitamin D (650-700 Mag, 3500 Vitamin D right now.) I feel good unless I have cramping while I am unclogging, it seems.
Do I not eat fiber when I have C? It's the only thing that seems to help some.
Thanks for any suggestions. I know that many have mostly D but that some of us may go back and forth.

Hi Susan,
A flag for me would be fiber....period....it is like sand paper for our gut when we have a diagnosis of LC or any colitis.
I know you need a relief for C so upping the Magnesium ( I took around 1000 mg while healing, and 10,000 VitD3 for about 6-7 months), eating safe fruit or basically one with more fructose sugars in it like Grapes (those get me going pretty quickly and I don't have C, but I love really crunchy grapes so will splurge on a few once in a while). Applesauce, Oranges, etc....at least with fruit you can regulate how much it may take for relief and still enjoy some fruit, (which most of us can not have with LC, CC or MC). I know fruits have fiber so perhaps just the juice would be good enough (prune juice is well known for C relief).
I wish you balance soon :-)

Agree with Erica's suggestion for the Vit D3 and magnesium.
That is a low Vit D3 intake for someone with inflammation, increasing it to 5000 would be a good option.
it can take a little while to find the 'happy sweet spot' of what works for you with fibre intake, etc so that you are not having C issues.
to avoid too much sugar intake, rather than fruit juice, increasing water intake, increasing oil intake is a good way to support the body clearing poop. (this works better than increasing fibre as fibre tends to bulk the stool and if you are having intermittant C issues then a bulkier stool is something to be avoided)

It just hit me why Cod Liver Oil was used way back when...I remember my grandma talking about it....said it was the darnedest stuff, but would work every time! Bet it loosened up the pipes for sure!!

our MC safe eating plan can be low in fat due to avoiding processed foods/takeaways. that is why fat intake is important

Erica and Gabes,
You are such a help! Your suggestions make so much sense. I will increase Mag and Vitamin D and add more oil. Also, carefully monitor the fiber I eat and keep it to a minimum. I did try to eat two prunes not long ago and it didn't help and grapes have not been successful. But maybe that was because I was bulking with too much other fiber like beans and salads and nuts.
