Question
Hi all,
Hoping to find everyone doing well and staying warm from the frigid temperatures last week.
I am trying to figure out if my magnesium is causing my hands to fall asleep at night. I cannot figure out a good dosage of mag to take now that I am in remission. For about a month my hands have been falling asleep at night, some nights worse than others. I have been using mag oil faithfully for the last 2.5 years without stopping. I have lowered it a bit since. I currently use about 150 mg of oil in the mornings, use mag deodorant, vitamin d cream that contains mag in morning and night, plus foot soaks several times a week at night. I don't drink caffeine, take any oral meds., and no D for awhile now (yay!!).
How many days would it take to get excess magnesium out of my system? I have noticed that they are worse when I put the remag lotion on before going to bed. I have stopped it already, but am still experiencing my hands sleeping....
I also have an injury to my shoulder (from playing basketball with my son a year ago) that throbs through the night off and on. I thought maybe a pinched nerve after tearing a ligament possibly that could be causing one hand to fall asleep. I can't sleep on it at all. I'm avoiding the Dr about it in hopes it heals over time.
I just hate to stop magnesium too long because it really helps with my migraines. But I don't want to be taking too much either.
Anybody have any thoughts on this?
I really appreciate all of you!! It's amazing to me how much better I feel now than I did 2.5 years ago.
Thank you guys!

I thought that too Gabes. I am taking B1 as thiamin mononitrite (25 mg) and B12 as methylcobalamin (1000 mcg) daily, but it is in a patch. They are in my multi-vitamin patch, along with other B's.

Too much B-6 can cause numbness in the hands. Are you taking any B-6 or anything like Methyl-Guard Plus?

I take a mult-vitamin plus from patch md. It is a patch and not an oral vitamin. It has 25 mg B6 as pyridoxine HCl.
I have been diligent in taking them to try and stay ahead of the flu.
I will stop using those for several days and see what happens.
Thank you so for your help guys!

That shouldn't be excessive, but if you stop taking them for a few days you'll know for sure.
Avoiding the flu is a worthy goal. My brother is a realtor, so he's got it now. When I talked with him today to see if he needed anything he pointed out that he wouldn't wish it (the flu) on anyone.

The flu is rampant here. The kids in our elementary school are dropping like flies. I so hope your brother feels better soon and you avoid it!
Thank you Tex, I knew you guys would give me ideas that I hadn't thought of! Take care!

Hi Tex and Gabes,
I must say that this thread and other recent references to numbness, B-12, methylation and MTHFR mutations have left me so confused that I’m not even sure what I’m confused about anymore.
I’d read that this the unmethylated, inactive form of B-12 was basically useless to me, and therefore continued taking and even increased dosages of methylated B vitamins (including B-1). Further reading complicated things further, by suggesting that in addition to under-methylation some people have issues caused by over-methylation!!!!!!!?????????
And now these seemingly “mixed messages(?)” about P-5-P and Methyl-Guard Plus have me scratching my head again.
Currently, in addition to numb toes, my right shoulder and arm have been tingling—pins and needles—and my hands have been falling asleep much more often at night and sometimes during the day. I think its likely connected to chronic neck and shoulder pain and stiffness, aggravated by poor sleep. Now that I’ve developed “trigger thumbs” in both hands, trying to find a comfortable sleep position has become even more challenging. Insomnia is increasing, but I’m definitely wired, even with so little sleep. I finally see a hand surgeon next week, although I scheduled almost 2 months ago. I’m hoping to avoid surgery and was told by my PCP that a cortisone shot might do the trick. Is cortisone to be strictly avoided? Lacking both opposable thumbs is kind of a challenge, not to mention pretty painful.
As of today I’m again eliminating all B vitamins for awhile to see if anything changes. Anyone care to hazard a guess (or suggest a reference) as to whether my symptoms sound more like over or under-methylation, or neither?
Oh—something positive—muscle cramps have finally abated again after resuming 1000 mg of (Dr’s Best Glycinate) and continuing to apply mag oil 2X daily. Had tried cutting back to 600 mg oral + oil, when they had started up again. Also all MC symptoms are still gone, even with lots of different green veggies and applesauce and continued non-digestive histamine reactions.
Hope everyone’s staying warm.
As always, many thanks and warmest regards,
Teri

or B12 are you taking active B's or active B12??
I was under the impression that B6 (P-5-P) and Methyl-Guard Plus were the go-to supplements for healing inflammation and taming MC, as well as for addressing methylation/histamine/mast cells issues, especially since I have both MTHFR mutations (heterozygous), and an elevated (colon) mast cell count. My B-12 was tested shortly after numbness in my toes began to increase in November, and serum levels were substantially elevated (1500). After stopping all (methylated) B vitamins for 11 days my serum B-12 actually increased to 2,000.Tex wrote: Too much B-6 can cause numbness in the hands. The B-6 reactions that I mentioned would be because of massive overdoses or many years of use. Based on your B-12 level gain after stopping supplements, surely you are normally under-methylated.
1000 mg (10 Tablets) of magnesium glycinate is a big dose. That would cause me to have heart arrythmias or worse (because I have compromised kidney function), but I realize that some people seem to be able to take that much without any problems.

Long shot here Martha...
But your injury....is the numbness in any of this area? If so my daughter-in-law who is an Occupational Therapist taught me to roll the skin across the grain of the direction a muscle functions in order to break up scar tissue. This could be a factor in any type of numbness whether it is from a pulled muscle, strain, etc.....
I used this technique on my left forearm and it took a couple months of daily rubbing across the grain of the muscle but I am no longer in any pain and can lift my wrists up and down without any added pain! I was told to roll back and forth the area as often as I wanted to throughout the day.
I'm doing this same technique to my husband over the top of his clavicle and just over the top of the shoulder and after just a couple treatments (which if it is painful while doing the rubbing means it is working) he has been pain free two evenings now.
Just something I have learned this last year....

Thank you Erica, I will definitely try that. I am sitting here with an ice pack on my shoulder now. The numbness is not in the same location though. The numbness in my hands have gotten better, but sadly I can't figure out why.....now my son is experiencing it. I have analyzed this for weeks. I'm just glad it is better. No sleep is not good for me or anybody. My son has done this in the past too before. Just treating him right now with Epsom salt baths and a B-complex patch. We shall see.....
My daughter and I have came down with a cold (we hope). I am giving her the elderberry extract (along with vitamin C and D) and thought I would try a bit. That wasn't a good idea.
Hope you guys stay warm and well!!

Hi Martha,
Sorry to hear that you're catching a virus. It's possible to have fever and body aches with a cold, but if they're severe, that's a bad sign.
If you want to try it, (according to the Vitamin D Council) a therapeutic dose of vitamin D is 2,000 IU per Kg of body weight per day. IOW a 75 Kg patient would need about 150,000 IU of vitamin D each day for several days early on after noticing symptoms. A therapeutic dose will supposedly stop the virus from fully developing and shorten the illness.
