Udi's Gluten-Free Breads

Post by humbird753 »

For those of you who eat Udi's breads, I'm sure you're already aware of the changes that have been made. Udi's has discontinued many of their breads effective January, 2018. Their alternate for the white bread they sold is now a new "soft" white bread that has a very gummy texture to it. They have also added corn (however I recently found out that the Xanthan Gum they used in the previous breads was derived from corn). If there are others here who use a different type of gluten-free bread and are happy with it, I would love to hear which brand you use.

Thank you.

I just got a loaf of Canyon House white. It seems ok. (I've used Udi's white for years but decided to try something new.

I like this Canyon Heritage one the best. It comes in whole grain and white but is decent sized and better texture than Udi's. I don't have a lot of things I can't tolerate though. https://canyonglutenfree.com/buy-gluten ... hole-Grain

I use Schar multi grain. It also comes in white. Also it is carried in my stores on the shelf not in the freezer. I can even find it at WalMart. I tried the CanyonHouse bagels but they only come in white at my stores. They were ok but I would have preferred multi grain. I found all three at WalMart.

Thank you ladies. When it comes to the gluten-free breads, it's nice to hear what others have tried and liked.

I'll look all these up.

Thanks for the link, Jari. Several stores in my area sell the Canyon Bakehouse brand. A store just a little out of my way sells the 7 grain as well as the cinnamon raisin.

Thank you Deb and Jari for the links you've provided. The breads actually look good, so I look forward to trying both of them. I'll check to see if those are sold locally and try them before making a bulk purchase. I don't eat bread very often, but do enjoy having some occasionally.

It's pretty good. It gets a little hard towards the end of its life, but I use it for all sandwiches. I like it best when I can heat it in the microwave but it works for deli turkey sandwiches also. I've tried several kinds and this is the one I like the best so far.

I never tried heating the bread in the microwave. That's a thought.

Like Brenda, I also prefer Schar Multi-Grain GF bread. Available on the shelves at Walmart in MN. I like the Schar brand much better than the Udi's, but everybody's taste buds are different.

I'm a newbie to all of this (diagnosed only a month ago) so I am just trying to find my way and discover what GF foods I like the best! I did recently find some Van's frozen GF waffles that are pretty good with a little bit of 100% pure maple syrup from my neighbors who make their own.

I'm finding a whole lot of "hit and miss" with this process! But I'll get there.

Hi Paula,

I'm chiming in late in this conversation, but I just saw it. Udi's is no longer on my list for GF bread, except for their French rolls and baguettes, which I occasionally use for dinner bread. My absolute favorite is Trader Joe's. They have great white and whole grain sandwich bread, as well as good bagels. I used to eat Canyon Bake house bread, but it's a bit gummy for my taste. We're all different. Good luck with finding something that works for you. They sure have come a long way with gluten free bread.

Love,
Kari

Gluten free bread....

Post by coryhub »

I was eating Trader Joes white bread and it is good but i seem to have began reacting to it, maybe the yeast. Anyways, i started buying plain rice cakes and using them as i would a slice of bread. Stomach much better now.

Interested in GF flatbread

Post by Linda J Heaslet »

I use a rice cake w/ nut butter and a bit of jam to address my dessert need. Interested in a Naan or flatbread recipe or commercial flatbread...ideas? Thanks, in advance!

Linda, if you can eat almond, coconut, and tapioca, you could try this naan recipe: https://myheartbeets.com/paleo-naan-indian-bread/

Schar breads are tasty, but for those of you sensitive to soy, be aware that they contain soy. Or they did 4 years ago, when I ate some without reading the ingredients.
