Relapse?

Post by Sheila »

After 3+ years of remission, I’m experiencing increasing stomach cramping and diarrhea. It’s not MC, at least not yet. I just read the post by the pilot who is also having issues. My allergies have been terrible this year. Everything in So. Florida is blooming. I’ve been cheating on my diet with dairy and was probably glutened about a month ago.

Reading advice given by Tex and Gabe’s, I took 3 mg of budesinide and will take a Claritin. I’ve been taking active B vitamins, just not regularly. I’m back to a strict Paleo diet but worry that I’ve also become sensitive to food that I eat almost every day, avocado for instance. I’ll try cutting that out as of today. I’ve got to eat enough to keep my weight from going any lower and that is really hard with such a limited diet.

I love you guys but I really didn’t want to come back here. I know relapsing happens but I thought since my last colonoscopy was clear I was pretty safe.

Thanks for the advice, even though it was for someone else.

Hi Sheila,

I'm sorry that you're having symptoms. I just thought I'd mention that if you're having a relapse, 3 mg of budesonide probably will do little (if any) good. Most people who suffer a relapse have to take the full dose of 9 mg of budesonide in order to regain control (if they choose to take budesonide). I'm not sure why the full dose is required, but that seems to be true for virtually everyone in this particular situation. I suspect that it has something to do with the fact that cortisol regulates bile acid uptake. IOW, glucocorticosteroids apparently also have the capability of regulating bile acid recycling and thereby treating BAM when it's compromised

Also, some people comment that they have better success with Allegra, rather than Claritin. But of course YMMV.

Best of luck to you. I hope you regain control soon.

Thanks, Tex. I took 3 mg because I couldn’t tolerate 9 mg the first time around. Both 6 and 9 mg caused severe constipation. I have Sjogrens and really shouldn’t be taking any antihistamines but will do anything to avoid a full blown relapse. I’ll give it a few days and if I’m still having symptoms I’ll take the 9 mg budesinide and buy some Allegra.

I hate to start budesinide again. I was beginning to get increased eye pressure and was put on glaucoma watch. The pressure stabilized and I’m afraid of an escalation if I get back on budesinide.

I appreciate your help. :bigbighug:

No, no, if 3 mg is a max dose for you, then don't take more. That would be asking for trouble — especially with the glaucoma issue. Sorry, I had forgotten the details of your situation (the stroke didn't help my memory any, LOL).

if histamine is a key part of your trigger / flare then I would look at taking P5P (active form of B6) and using topical magnesium to help the body moderate the histamine levels.

Thanks Tex and Gabe’s. Well, one 3 mg dose of budesinide and one Claritin and this morning was not nearly as painful and D not as bad. My diet is back to basics. I take active B vitamins after getting the epigenetic results from 23andme/Genetic Genie. I don’t take them all the time but will certainly do that now.

I’m glad I had some budesinide left over. I don’t want to get my GI doc involved if I don’t have to. He’ll want to do a colonoscopy and that’s not happening.
