Low Sodium Level
Hello. I was at my primary care physician for a wellness visit today. My blood work from September was fine except my sodium level was low. He didn't seem concerned about it and asked me if I drink a lot of water. I drink water throughout the day but not enough that would cause health issues. I'm assuming this is another gift from the LC. Any recommendations for what I should take or do to increase my sodium level? I asked him how my Vitamin D level was and he said it was fine, I should take no more than 1,000 IU a day. No comment from me.

Hi Marcia,
You might have just been drinking more water than normal the day of the draw, so your serum was more diluted than normal.
You can increase your sodium level by eating more salt on your food (sea salt is best), but your level also depends on how much water you drink.
IMO this is a side effect of the current (government and medical) fad to reduce salt in foods to insufficient levels. The advocated levels may be OK for someone with a desk job, but not for anyone who perspires a lot. Similar to vitamin D, they want to starve us for salt.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Thanks, Tex. I don't salt my food, I never have. Lately I was thinking that some of the food I eat contains too much salt. I guess I was wrong. I'll make an effort to use sea salt. I always know that I can come here for answers. Thanks again!

I taste test my food...I'll add salt if I think it needs a little pick me up in order for me to eat it, lol. I don't use pepper so salt is the only thing I flavor things with, and not everything I eat needs to be salted...it's just a personal preference per person I suspect.
