Another trip under my belt!
I just got back today from a quick 2 1/2 day trip to Vegas. I had a ticket I had to use that I didn't use last summer before my eye surgery so I decided to go. This is my first trip by myself since I was diagnosed with CC. I used to go to Vegas all the time by myself. The verdict is still out as to whether I'll go again by myself. I had a great time, but I found myself getting really overtired. And before I could just run in anywhere and grab food. Not so this time. I did eat mostly In and Out burgers and fries. Both safe.
The interesting thing is that I've been in remission for quite sometime now, and lately have found myself a little on the constipated side (that's another post for a later date when I can better explain some of the things I've tried (and some need a little more time). However, about 2 1/2 hours before I needed to leave for the airport, I found myself with a WD explosion. I attribute that to pure nerves at the thought of going by myself. I took a couple of Immodium and was good to go.
I got to the airport and went through TSA. They took absolutely everything out of my food bag and run this tape like stuff over it. Then I had to put everything back in there. I also got my right arm patted down. Don't ask me what that was about! I've gone through TSA several times with my food and never had anything like this happen to me. They didn't confiscate anything.....were just checking. Coming home I was lucky enough to get TSA precheck and breezed through security. The gal that checked my luggage didn't even ask for my ID.
Anyway, this disease does a toll on us and I had to slow down and rest some of the time.
Just wanted to report so that those who are new to all of this can see that there is light at the end of the tunnel. You can get your life back. You might just need to take things a little slower!

I took two trips last summer and recently returned from a trip to CA from NC. In three weeks I will fly to MN. In remission at home, my biggest problem when traveling is constipation. Last summer I learned that adding fiber was not a good idea! That lead, once home, to extreme cramping and bathroom explosions!
On my recent CA trip, I tried Mag Oxide (which works for me if I am constipated at home) Colace, Senakot and glycerin suppositories. It took four days for me to finally have a bowel movement I was gone eight days and when I returned home it took me two weeks to be consistently normal again with intermittent D. I was extremely careful with my diet in CA and ate only my own food on the airplane. It seems that I just have to readjust after a trip.
I had a routine appointment with my GI doc and he gave me packets of Miralax, explaining that it was the main product in the yuky liquid we drink before a colonoscopy. It is a laxative that increases the amount of water in the intestinal tract to stimulate bowel movements.
Have you or others tried Miralax for constipation?

I don't usually have to take anything for the constipation. I have some foods that I can eat that will loosen things up for me. The only time I've take Miralax is for colonoscopy prep. It is brutal for me!

Thank you for sharing this information. If we are in remission and are in our daily routine, everything is most of the times ok, although thats the case for me at the moment, because my life is adjusted to my needs and I'm used to the things I can't do anymore. But if anything is different, then we have to plan it and we don't know how we shall react.
In january I made a trip from Amsterdam to South Africa and took all my food with me. I mailed with the KLM in advance to ask if that was ok and it was. That gave me a secure feeling on the airport by checking in. It went ok. Flying back (nightflight, while I can never sleep in an airplane), was difficult because I had so much abdominal pain. And back home I was exhausted for days, because of one night not sleeping and my problems with the air-condition, where among my eye-allergion.
I mention that the last years, like you, I need more time for everything and need more sleep/relaxation. I blame it on the fact that I'm getting older, but I think you have a point that this is probably also related to my MC. So thank you once more for sharing this information! Good to know that we are not alone.

Hi Janie,
I have a banana bread recipe made with almond flour that I make and slice up and freeze the slices to take. It gives me some protein. I also have started eating those RX bars. They are protein bars and are gluten, dairy, and soy free (they are not egg free, however, that's what gives them the protein). But since I've been in remission, I can eat eggs cooked in things (I still haven't eaten just a fried egg or anything like that). This is my favorite one, but they do have other flavors and I buy them at Costco: https://www.target.com/p/rxbar-174-choc ... lsrc=aw.ds
I also have found a bacon jerky and also a beef jerky that I can tolerate. I'm not found of any kind of jerky, but if I need protein and am hungry, it works. I sometimes carry the little fruit cups. I also take some of those Theo chocolate almond butter cups. I carried some packets of almond butter that I could put on either bananas or I carried a couple of those rice rollers.
That's mainly it, at least for this trip! I was guaranteed not to starve.

I forgot to add that I never travel anywhere without my Gluten Ease. When eating out, I always take one for good measure and have never had any problems. I also carry my Immodium if needed and I still have a prescription of Budesonide that if push comes to shove and nothing else works, I can start back with it.

By yourself I am simply impressed by all this!!
I think now at the point I am at I could go do something like this....I've accustomed myself to eating Waaay different than anyone else and it doesn't bother me if I am not getting that burger with fries and milkshake anymore....or that fancy $100 meal with wine.....it doesn't take much to fill me with what ever is safe and available.

Janie, like Jari, I take beef jerky with very few ingredients. But my main protein is from ham that I cut into bite size pieces and put in a baggie. I don't worry about it lasting for awhile while I air travel and have not had an issue with it. For car trips, a small cooler works well and even more food can be added.
I also take Snyders gluten free, egg free, soy free, dairy free pretzels. They also have a honey mustard flavor. Rice crackers and packets of almond butter.
Baby wipes in a baggie are nice to have to clean my hands.
I'm beyond caring what anyone thinks of me while I eat on an airplane. People don't seem to care. I take water and when drinks are offered, I get apple juice or less often, tomato juice because of the acidity. Ginger ale seems okay, too.
If staying with friends, I usually have them buy cashew or coconut or almond milk in advance and rice crackers and peanut butter or almond butter. Thus far, they have been great about my diet, asking questions. Taking a picture of a product and sending it to them is helpful.

I have carried a little baggie of ice before (with some extra freezer bags). Figured that if they confiscate it at TSA, I could get some once inside the gate area. Have never had a problem. I didn't carry anything this time that needed cooling, but my frozen banana bread kept everything cool. Hi, Jari! So glad that you had a good trip! Going to Vegas alone - wow! I'm impressed!
Janie, I'm leaving for FL on Sunday. We're flying and I'll pack Nick's turkey sticks, Oskri coconut bars, hemp protein powder and Justin's almond butter (in a pouch). The last time my husband packed 8 oz. containers of almond milk for me to mix with the protein powder (my breakfast) but as we're staying near a Publix I'm banking on them carrying it. At Publix I'll buy bananas, Applegate Farms organic turkey dogs, red beets, frozen broccoli (we'll have a microwave), Jackson sweet potato chips and whatever else I can safely eat. We'll eat dinner out every evening. Like Jari, I take Gluten Ease before every meal and hope for the best. I'll have Pepto in my carry-on but I've never had to use it. As my husband now has neuropathy we'll be going at a slower pace which is fine with me. I'm with Susan in no longer caring what other people think of what I'm eating. Travel for the first time is scary but once you do it you'll be fine.
