Bone broth affecting Coumadin?

Post by Grahm »

I’m posting this question for a friend, she has been reading on here for a week or so but hasn’t posted yet. She has been eating the bone broth with a few potatoes trying to heal her gut. This morning her count was 4.5 and is supposed to be between 2-3. She was wondering if this could affect Coumadin? I wouldn’t think so but I know someone here will know for sure.

Thanks so much for your time.

Hi Connie,

I assume you're referring to her platelet count. Like you, I don't see offhand why bone broth would have such an effect, but it's such a potent source of nutrients and amino acids that it's not impossible that it might provide so much nourishment that the body might override the effects of Coumadin somewhat.

For example, patients taking Coumadin have to avoid foods rich in Vitamin K. This includes spinach, Brussels sprouts, kale, green tea, etc. Bone broth is a good source of calcium, protein, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin D, potassium, zinc, manganese, copper, boron, iron, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, and the B vitamins.

I hope this helps.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
