Hair problems

I know I have consulted y'all before about my hair thinning, but this disease really gets my goat with losing hair. I have some small spots where my hair has thinned and it's upsetting. When I had diarrhea in Buda, TX, I went to an Austin GI specialist who labeled my problem as Pancreatic Enzyme Deficiency. He gave me Enzymes, it stopped the diarrhea and my hair grew back thicker and glorious. Now I take CREON, an Enzyme for MC, and darn if I can't get my hair to grow back thick and luxurious. Will I ever have thicker hair again? Does anybody else have this dilemma?

My GI system has improved, I feel better, but my hair is not thick like it once was back in Texas. Darn! A woman's hair is her crown and glory and I get depressed when mine thins out. What say y'all about this perplexing problem? I have been to a dermatologist in Savannah, she did a biopsy of my scalp and said it was disease related! Yes, it's MC that is thinning my hair. Can someone help me with this thinning hair problem and have y'all experienced the same thing and has your hair gotten thicker once you have healed? I get NUTS about my hair. Thanks, Dorothy

Hi, Dorothy. I experienced a change in my hair, too. My once thick, wavy hair became dry & brittle and was thinning. Once I began taking Vitamin D3 and Magnesium Glycinate my hair returned to its normal state. I imagine it was all part of healing my leaky gut, but the change occurred after I started the supplements.

Marcia, I too, take Vitamin D3 and Magnesium, not Magnesium Glycinate. What's the difference? I also take supplements for hair called Biotin and a well-rounded diet of vitamins. I also take CREON, an enzyme to break down my food for nourishment. I'm seeing a therapist for PTSD! I eat well-cooked veggies, fruit recommended for MC and healthy meats. Nothing fried. I don't understand why my hair won't grow back thick! I want my hair I had back in Buda, TX. Boo Hoo!

Hi Dorothy

Pure magnesium powder is highly combustible and it burns extremely fast, so if it's confined it can be used as a powerful explosive. To get around that problem, magnesium supplements are sold as a chemically stable compound containing magnesium and some other element. Some forms of magnesium are very poorly absorbed. For example, humans can only absorb about 2 to 3 % of magnesium oxide. The rest stays in our intestines and acts as a laxative. Magnesium glycinate is one of the most easily-absorbed forms available, and it's the least-likely form to promote diarrhea for MC patients, so that's why we use it.

The intestines heal very slowly. The damage caused by gluten almost always takes at least 3–5 years for adults to heal, although kids can heal in less than a year. You will reach remission of your symptoms long before your gut is able to do much healing. Your ability to utilize supplements will improve slowly as you heal. That's why it takes time for long-term problems such as hair loss to resolve.

I hope this is helpful.

Tex has provided awesome explaination....

To expand, it takes months /years for our bodies to do good healing....
and that is reliant on more than right eating plan, and right supps.... our mental and emotional attitude is very important. Be patient, relax and nurture yourself.

Hi, Dorothy. Before I found this site I had no idea there is a difference in the types of magnesium. I previously had taken magnesium oxide which caused D. for me. I am so grateful I found this group who are all so willing to help us on the journey to healing.

I too am experiencing hair loss. I attribute it to a side effect of budesonide but GI doesnt believe that since its such a low dose that gets into the bloodstream. I am also getting acne, little white heads, on my face, which may also be a side effect. If not the medicine its the disease. I am trying bone broth and collagen for the hair. Unfortunately, its a very slow process if it is going to grow back. I am hopeful for that.

DeeDee,

Some people are much more sensitive to the side effects of budesonide than others. Also, if you are using any HRT, it might have an effect.

Thanks Tex,

I think I am just one of the unlucky ones to get side effects. My only other med is for blood pressure and I doubt thats causing it. I am hoping it comes back after I am done with my slow taper.

Yes, it may take a while, but it should come back after you wean off the med.

Can y'all tell me where to find Magnesium Glycinate? I've looked long and hard and have not found it yet. Can you find it at GNC or health food stores. CREON has kicked in and helped tremendeously. My hair has gotten thicker until when the D starts. Doing okay for now. Without this forum I would be lost and in outer space.

Google is your friend:

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss ... +glycinate

Many people here take the Doctor's Best brand. I do, too, occasionally. At first it seemed to give me diarrhea, as all magnesium tends to do, but I'm becoming less suspicious of it after five months on budesonide for LC. I see no evidence that it has affected my hair, positively or negatively, but one never knows about the multiplicity of unproven claims regarding most supplements.

Dorothy, I purchase Doctor's Best on Vitacost. That's where I purchase most of my supplements.

Hi, I call myself RolinRiver
I am just plain clueless about much of this stuff. I was diagnosed 2 years ago with C. Colitis and M.Colitis (same family) I have had Diarrhea forever it seems. I can barely eat anything. Some applesauce, toast, chicken. I drink Kefer and kimchee to feed bacteria in my tummy. I have taken budesonide and it was a nightmare. Hair fell out, had hot flashes, mood swings, cried almost everyday, bruising, pimples and I still have diarrhea. Had to stop taking it. I am on my second GI specialist the first one kept putting me off on his PA. I have nothing against a PA but if I pay DR. prices I want a doctor. I have had the hardest time of it since February. Mostly I don't know what to eat. Thanks for adding me I look forward to learning here.

Hi Rolin,

Welcome to the group. As you'll soon learn by reading here, that toast is probably the main reason why you have diarrhea.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.
