malabsorption question

Post by barbieAnn »

Hello -

Just had another quick question -

In regard to the weight loss, I have read, and would believe that this is caused by not being able to absorb the nutrients due to all of the bowel movements - does anyone know why some of these tests come back 'normal' - no malabsorption issues, when so much weight is lost? I have had several of these tests using stool samples, and they always come back normal - doc telling me that I have no malabsorption issues.

Those tests are based on normal amounts of fat in the diet. Most doctors apparently don't realize that people automatically begin cutting back the amount of fat in their diet when they begin to react, because normal amounts of fat just make the diarrhea worse, and it goes straight to the toilet. Consequently, most of us eat much less fat than normal when we are trying to recover from a flare. The tests probably show normal amounts of fat in your stool because there were below normal amounts of fat in your diet when you provided the sample for testing.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
