After normals most of the winter, I began having soft stools mid summer and that eventually changed to D four weeks ago. (My gluten free, dairy free, soy free, egg free, low fiber diet had not changed.) I would have D once or twice a day, usually in the morning. Also, for a long time now, I have also had a sour taste or feeling in my upper stomach, knowing that I have a small hiatal hernia.
I had increased my Doctor's Best mag glycinate to 400 mg a day from 300 mg because my last level was not as high as I wanted it to be. I wondered if the extra mag caused the D but I looked back over my journal and had taken that much before so I was skeptical.
I saw my GI doc on October 11th. He agreed that the D may be caused by Bile Acid Malabsorption and wrote me a script for Colestipol 1 gm tablets to try. I am 68 and had my gall bladder out at age 21. My mother did so at age 28 although one doesn't have to be missing a gall bladder to have BAM. He suggested one tablet in the morning and at night but to experiment. It took a three days but then I had a Normal. And, the sour feeling is gone. I am still experimenting as to when to take the tablets and how many. I wanted tablets (they are large) as I didn't want to mess with mixing packets.
Colestipol, or any bile acid sequestrant, is tricky as they can deplete fat soluble vitamins. I see my internist in a couple of weeks and will talk with him about having my D, K levels tested as well as possible other levels. Med are to be taken an hour before or at least four hours after the Colestipol.
If this didn't work, he suggested Entocort again which I didn't want to do.
Perhaps this can help others. I know that there are members who have BAM and had read those posts, thankfully, as I learned what BAM was and eventually, it applied to me. Many thanks!
