OK to take supplements at same time as Budesonide?

Post by kbromby »

I have gotten into the habit of taking my supplements 2 hours after I take Budesonide, but I can't remember why I do this. Is this required? Thanks.

As far as I'm aware, there are no special interactions with budesonide, except two — grapefruit juice (grapefruit makes virtually all drugs more potent), and thyroid hormone. In higher doses, glucocorticoids tend to reduce the conversion of active thyroxine (T4) to the more active form triiodothyronine (T3). IOW, it can temporarily induce hypothroidism. But timing may not matter as much in this case because the conversion of T4 to T3 goes on continuously. So just be aware that if you alter your thyroid supplement dose while you're taking a glucocorticoid (corticosteroid), you will need to readjust it after stopping the corticosteroid because the dose may be too high without the corticosteroid.

In general, you should be able to take budesonide with or without food. Magnesium will tie up certain antibiotics (and therefore weaken their effectiveness), but as far as I know, magnesium should be OK with budesonide.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
