Hi y'all,
I have a question that needs attention. I have ordered Dr. Fine's test kit. I've had it for nearly a month. I can't get a sample because of my constant diarrhea. I can't waste $400.00, and let the test kit sit. I'm taking 2 Imodium in the morning and 2 Imodium at night. How do you get a sample when you have constant diarrhea? Thanks, Dorothy

Hi Dorothy,

Ordinary diarrhea (osmotic diarrhea) is not a problem. I know I've never sent them a solid sample — I couldn't if I wanted to because I've had an ileostomy for over 9 years. They probably see mostly diarrhea in their samples. Secretory diarrhea (watery diarrhea) might be a problem because of extreme dilution, but unless it's mostly water, it should still work OK if there's enough solid material in it to allow them to centrifuge out a sample.

You could always call them and ask, if you think it's too diluted. I'm sure they get that question fairly often. After all, who's going to order stool tests if their stools look normal? Precious few, I'll bet.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
