MC Prevalence

Post by Charles70 »

Hi All

I am a newbie and am trying to explain MC to family and friends. Despite all my research I am still not clear how common MC is. On the internet it seems to say that approximately 1 in 1,000 people has MC. But I’m not sure if 1 in 1,000 is the estimated prevalence or confirmed cases. Given that people need to have a colonoscopy with a biopsy to be diagnosed, and because many people with the disease may never get around to having a colonoscopy with biopsy, I assume there is a big difference between confirmed cases and actual prevalence.

Any thoughts on how common our disease is?

Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles,

According to some Scandinavian and Canadian research, it's more common than Crohn's disease, and more common than celiac disease. Exactly what that makes the prevalence is anybody's guess, since the prevalence of those diseases is not exactly chiseled in stone, either.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
