Vitamins & MC
I have MC - both lymphocytic & collagenous and have been keeping it relatively under control with diet. I found any kind of animal fat will cause me pain, bloat, etc. My question is....can vitamins cause irritation, bloat, pain, etc.? I started taking vitamins again this week (Multi-vitamin, B-Complex, MSM Chondroitin, Tumeric, Lysine) and have been suffering. Its either one of these or cheese and I don't remember dairy hurting me so. Thanks for any insight.
Some of them can cause all sorts of problems. We have to check the labels very carefully to look for ingredients that we can't tolerate. Multi-vitamins often cause problems because they usually contain the cheapest forms of vitamins. Some of us have problems with tumeric. It sounds like a good idea, but you would have to swallow about a wheelbarrowfull to actually suppress enough inflammation to notice. And of course we can't tolerate very much of it. We're all different, but I can tolerate Centrum Silver.
You should be able to tolerate a moderate amount of fat at this point. I wonder if you might be sensitive to beef. I had those symptoms before I cut beef out of my diet. It would cause mild to moderate bloating, and make me feel "off", but no diarrhea. And the next day I would have a headache and upper back pain between my shoulders.
I was like you — eating cheese or ice cream didn't seem to bother me). My digestive system seems to tolerate it just fine, But then I noticed that the fingers of my right hand were beginning to grow crooked and twisted, and the finger joints were all swollen. A stool test at EnteroLab showed that I produce antibodies to casein. IOW, casein causes osteoarthritis for me, so I cut it out of my diet forever.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

re: Vitamins
Thank you both for replying. Your information was very helpful. Tumeric was one I was taking. I've stopped them altogether & no more pain. I will try Centrum silver and see how that does by itself.

Re: re: Vitamins
I had a stem cell procedure on my knee 10 months ago and upon the recommendation of the doctor, was taking Turmeric as one of the supplements that can help with stem cell production and the healing process.cab61 wrote:Thank you both for replying. My MC started to act up almost immediately after I began taking turmeric. So by process of elimination on a couple of the new supplements, I found that it was the turmeric that was bothering me. Stopped turmeric and that resolved the GI issues.
Hope this helps.....
re: Tumeric vitamin
You are the 2nd person who's told me about turmeric. Believe me I'm not going to try it "just to see" if that's what it was! I'd rather not experience that pain again.... Thank you for your info it does indeed help...

Well this isn't good about turmeric! I had a knee replacement in Feb and take it instead of Tylenol. It helps my knee a great deal. :( But if it's contributing to my LC, I'll have to cut it out. I take the Meriva type.
Re: Vitamins & MC
Are you having MC symptoms? I wouldn't stop taking it if it's helping, and you're not having any MC symptoms. It doesn't necessarily bother all of us. On the other hand, if you're having symptoms, there's a good chance it may be the reason.

thanks, Tex. Yes massive diarrhea is still present. That's how I found your site last night. I'm so encouraged after reading things here. I realize I was doing everything wrong. LOL

I had a 9 month reflare and could not get into remission until I eliminated oral supplements--all of them.
