Colonoscopy for those diagnosed with MC

Post by Lyn777 »

I was diagnosed in 2009 with LC. Have not had a colonoscopy since. I'm 47. I know at 50, the general population starts getting theirs every ten years (if no abnormalities are found). I'm wondering if others' doctors recommended every 10 or 5 years for those with MC.

I was diagnosed via colonoscopy biopsies with Microscopic Colitis a little more than two years ago. I asked my doctor that exact question, whether having Microscopic Colitis should change my colonoscopy interval going forward.

He said that he recommends the regular 10 year interval for me, unless GI symptoms point to the need for a "diagnostic colonoscopy". I am solidly in long term remission from Microscopic Colitis with no symptoms (completely diet controlled) so I hope that I can stick to that 10 year interval.

If your last colonoscopy was 2009, I would think that it would be time for you to have another colonoscopy, even with the regular 10 year interval.

With having been diagnosed with MC, I would think that they would perform the standard "biopsies" and lab analysis that they performed for your original diagnosis while they are performing your current colonoscopy. If biopsies came back negative, that wouldn't be a ticket to ditch your MC diet in my opinion, but would be interesting to see if you still test positive for MC. I'd certainly have this discussion with your GI doctor. Don't want to miss the opportunity for having colon biopsies while they are performing the procedure.

All the best.......
