The Little Things

Post by Marcia K »

Good morning. I hope this finds everyone well & safe from COVID-19. I typically drinke my breakfast - Hemp protein with a shot of coconut oil in almond milk. I've grown tired of drinking my breakfast, but didn't know what to eat. I didn't want to eat leftovers for breakfast because that's normally what I have for lunch. For the first time since December 2013 I ate an egg!!! I had one organic egg with two slices of uncured canadian bacon on a slice of gf toast. Eureka, it was awesome! I work in a 324 bed long-term care facility and so far we have not had one positive resident or employee (an answer to prayer!). We were the first in our county to stop visitation, take employee temperatures every day when entering the facility, all staff wearing masks and so far it has paid off. Be safe and take care, everyone!

I hear you on the awesomeness of a good (non-liquid) breakfast. For 35 or 40 years (most of my college years, and all of my normal working years) my breakfast every day (to save time) was Nestle's Instant Breakfast in a glass of milk. I thought I didn't have time to eat a "regular" breakfast. Over the decades, I probably drank tons of casein. Then MC forced me to change my diet. These days (thank goodness) I'm able to eat eggs and bacon.

Kudos to your facilitity's management and staff for recognizing early on the need to take effective measures to keep the virus out. Too bad that the rest of the country waited too long.

The scary part is, apparently anyone can be contagious before showing any symptoms, presumably including temperature increases. At least that's what I've been maintaining from the first day that I became aware of Covid-19. And in some cases, the incubation period can be longer than two weeks. We really don't know enough about it's contagiousness.

My brother who has spent almost all of the past 3 months in hospitals or rehabs is now in an ICU in Boston on a ventilator in a medically induced coma. This is day 6 on the ventilator and 9 days since he was hospitalized. I am his health care proxy. I do not live near him but my sense is that his rehab facility (also a nursing home) did not take enough precautions soon enough and in fact they discharged him after he told them he was not feeling well. He was discharged back into his elderly housing building that was in lock down. Within a few hours an ambulance had to be called and he was hospitalized. By discharging him sick they put not only him but the staff of his apartment complex and its vulnerable residents in danger. My brother has lifelong psychiatric problems and is not the best advocate for himself. This is hard and the outcome as yet unknown.

Thanks, Tex. We received pushback from the staff at first, but then as the positive cases increased they were thankful for everything that was done ahead of time. After the first week of so they started taking temps as we left for the day. On a particularly stressful Friday my temp was 99.8, which I thought showed what stress does to our bodies. It was normal in the morning, and I was fine other than the elevated temp.

Jean, I'm so sorry about your brother. That's a sad case indeed. We would never discharge someone who wasn't well and I'm very grateful for that. I wish the best for your brother and hugs to you. I can imagine how difficult this is for you.

Jean,

I hope your brother is one of the lucky ones who is able to recover despite mismanaged care. And I hope that you can continue to stay safe. We're living in some tough times, where just deciding to go out for groceries or other supplies might carry the gravity of a life or death decision.

Thank you Tex. About an hour ago I gave the doctor permission to remove my brother's ventilator. He was going downhill and if he survived it would have been with a horrible quality of life in institutions. I am just waiting to hear word from the hospital that he has passed. These are hard times. My brother had a hard life. It's very sad.

Keep safe,
Jean

Jean, Sorry for your loss.

Marcia, Thank you for the work you do. My niece works in a small long term care facility in our area. From the Facebook posts she shared they were locked down sometime in March.

Dear Jean,

I just bought a painting of Pema Chodron, which has a few of her original quotes on it. One of them says: "To live is to be willing to die over and over again". Don't know if you would relate to the quote, but I thought of what you're going through when reading it. I'm so sorry you and your brother are suffering and will send lots of healing thoughts your way.

Marcia,

Couldn't agree more that it is the little things that make a difference. So glad you've got something different to enjoy:).

Love,
Kari
