Abdominal pain

Post by Matt »

Hey all, I was curious about how many others here experience gut pain. I know the typical flag for MC is chronic diarrhea but I only experienced that for a brief window before diagnosis, and the primary symptom for me has always been pain; particularly around the upper abdomen and behind the belly button, including point tenderness / sensitivity to touch. I'm used to it at this point, but it's hard to find other cases where gut pain was the main presenting symptom.

When it first started, I went through rounds of imaging/labs as I thought it was appendix or gallblader issues, but nothing was ever found or flagged as irregular until a biopsy via colonoscopy led to the Lymphocytic Colitis diagnosis. I've always had a nagging fear that this pain is from something else that we've never been able to find the source on, but if other folks have similar pain when flaring, then I won't worry so much. Any shared thoughts or experiences with pain here would be much appreciated!

Hi Matt,

Gut pain was my primary issue until I got my diagnosis. Being female I thought I was having female problems....come to find out it’s all the inflammation in the lining of the intestines that give off this pain.

Once you get good healing under your belt (pun intended) then the pain will slowly subside.....so since it sounds like you’ve done lots of homework on your specific pain and it hasn’t been linked to anything then I’m going to suspect it’s all due to LC.

Take care and work on progress not perfection, you’ll get there.
Cheers
Erica

Hi Matt,

Abdominal pain was a constant problem for me before I was able to achieve remission. I believe abdominal pain is a problem for approximately half of us. The other half have diarrhea without pain. The official medical description of MC does not mention pain, and that's one of the main reasons why doctors don't understand mc.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thank you both for the replies and clarity here - it's a relief to know this is more common than most sources make it sound. Even my GI doctor said it's not really a symptom of MC, though I stopped following up with her since the gameplan thus far has been simply throwing steroids at it until it goes away. Probably preaching to the choir here on that one.

Also Erica I love that advice: "Work on progress not perfection" - will most definitely keep that in mind. Thanks again!
