LOPERAMIDE

I wanted to ask about Loperamide for CC and how to take. I know it has to be a bit more than what the package says. I had been doing fine for 45 days after my last Budesonide and have been GF, DF, SF for over five years. I eat Paleo and very rarely cheat and if I cheat for me it is maybe eating a handful of GF pretzels or Grain Free pretzels or Chips I have found. Thats about it. I buy nothing but Organic and am very careful. On Saturday I came home from a nice 3 mile walk (my usual) and just was taking off my headphones and out of the blue (had been feeling great) I had explosive D and it was just coming. I was alone, ran to the bathroom and then quickly got in the shower. I know you all can relate but this is just the most humiliating experience. I am really down about this and a nervous wreck that it will happen at work or at the store. This is only the second time this has happened and the first was when I first had the problem and after going to the doctor etc was diagnosed with CC and that was 6 years ago. I am now trying the Loperamide and took 2 right away and that was at 11:00 am and then I took 1 at 3:00pm and another at 8:00 pm. On Sunday I had a little D and took another one and then just because I took another one at 6:00 pm. Woke this morning and had just a little D so took another at 4:00 am. So I guess what I'm asking is do you maybe take 2 or 3 a day? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jan,
I can't take it, because even half a tablet makes me dizzy, but I understand that it's a relatively safe medication, so you can safely take at least 8 per day, as needed. If you overdo it, you'll get constipation. And it's safe to do this for a relatively long term, also, if you need to take it.
I note that the extra stress of the weather might have caused you to have "runner's diarrhea". You're probably well aware of that phenomenon:

Thank you so much Tex! I tried to look this up and everything just said it can work well for MC sufferers. I had done the Pepto years ago but had tried last spring when it started up again and it didnt seem to work well. When I had mentioned it to the doctor when I called her she said her patients seem to have better luck with the Lopermide so I thought I would give it a try. Constipated is a good thing right now so no worries. I had not heard of Runners D? I read the link and that is interesting. It has never happened to me before but I guess there is always a first time.

I have MC and has been on the budesonide 9mg for 2 months now. Prior to that I was able to taper the budesonide but then had to go back within a week . My Dr at that time suggested staying on 3mg and taking it every other day. Is it OK to take the Loperamide while on the Budesonide .

Yes, it's safe to take loperamide while taking budesonide. But since they're both constipating, be careful that you don't overdo it.
If you're unable to taper the budesonide dose without relapsing, something in your diet is probably overwhelming the budesonide, most likely gluten,

I have started on the Stage 1 diet plan to see why I can't get off the Budesonide 9mg which has been over 2 months . I have many questions .
The first question is why when I began the Budesonide that I was able to eat some of the foods which are not good according to the diet plan?
The second question is some of the foods and wonder if I can't take any more . These are as follows
1). I take a Milk Shake with Almond Milk and Plant Based Protein drank which has Pea and Quinoa Blend to give me more protein and calories due to loosing wt. The milk Shake has Pea Protein Isolate in it .Is this OK ?
2), I have also been able to get Green Beans but are they considered a Legume ?
3) You mentioned Bone Broth is good but is Beef Ok ? and is Bone Broth the same has Bone Marrow Broth
4) Any other suggestions for a type of milk is Almond milk is not good ?

Because the budesonide was apparently working.

That depends on whether or not you're sensitive to soy. My question is, "Why aren't you eating real food, rather than fake (ultra processed) foods in the form of protein supplements? If it's because your trying to follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, you're going to have trouble getting enough protein to stay in good health, unless you're willing to eat shellfish, or certain (safe) fish, or some form of animal protein, because most vegetarians who develop MC are sensitive to soy, including legumes, and that eliminates most of the decent plant sources of protein, unfortunately.
3) You mentioned Bone Broth is good but is Beef Ok ? and is Bone Broth the same has Bone Marrow Broth
The answer to your first question is, "That depends on whether you are sensitive to beef". The answer to your second question is, "That depends on how the bone broth is made, and what kind of bones are used".
4) Any other suggestions for a type of milk is Almond milk is not good ?
There are nondairy milks available made from many different types of nuts, hemp seed, and rice. But rice milk contains traces of gluten because of a malting process that's started with barley malt, although the finished product is certified to contain less than 20 ppm. But some of us react to certain antibodies at the 20 ppm level. Most of us have found that even though we may show a sensitivity to almonds, almond milk still works just fine, and if the gums in commercial almond milk cause a problem, almond milk can be made at home without those gums.

Thank you Tex for the quick response
The Milk Shake that I have been using is only a supplement and I eat balance meals and do not consider myself as a vegan . I also stay away from the process foods and keep track of my diet using a diet log which is reviewed by my dietitian. I have been having the shakes only as a snack, usually before I go to bed .
I also wanted to know if Green Beans are considered a legume

Thanks for the clarification. Now we're on the same page.
While pea protein is definitely a problem for anyone who is sensitive to soy, green beans are safe for most of us. The chemical changes that occur as the beans mature modify their characteristics to put them into the legume classification. Green beans are harvested when the beans (inside the pods) are so immature that they are still safe for us.
